This morning on CBS News, there was an interesting news feeds about chickens living in the city.
Did youknow the average life span of a chicken is 10 years. And a chicken will lay eggs for 2 years. The remaining 8 years you have to feed and tend them for no eggs.
I decided chickens are not the way to go unless you are willing to slaughter them for the meat.
Poor chickens.

Hmm, my ladies must really be happy then, ours are still laying, some at the 5 year mark. All of them are now 3 years old........ Kyle, how about you do a study of laying habits of well cared for chickens? You could call it scientific research........then let them try and mess with you.

The meat is hard, best used for stewing and soups. Old ones can be used for "Brothing" ie ... canning it for future use, then the chicken slow-cooked in a crockpot for things like White Chili Chicken, Tamales etc.... to tenderize it.

This story goes hand in hand with another link I provided a while ago. When they quit laying eggs, many people who thought it would be cool to have egg layers, just abandoned them in city parks and such, instead of killing them for the meat. Now some of these cities are discussing whether or not to continue allowing hens in the city limits. Like many other things in life, a few bad apples ruin all for the majority.

Maybe when they stop producing people can drop them off at the local VFW for chicken night in exchange for a voucher.

Abandoning animals is terrible. I've heard about people abandoning unwanted cats and dogs as well. Are those cities considering outlawing them?
I've heard of kids drowning in pools; I think that is even worse. Maybe they should outlaw pools? Where do we stop?

If Kyle were to abandon the chickens in the park, they would probably walk over to the bar across the street from his place. They would get overserved and then wander into the street and start a drunken brawl. In fact, I could have swore I saw one urinating behind that dumpster in the alley last weekend.
At least now we know why the chicken crossed the road...........
