I've been pushing for the city to utilize one of its greatest assets, the railway. At one time there was a railroad hub just southwest of town where most freight trains went through on the way west of the Mississippi river. That's what the city needs to do. Work with the limited assets that it has. DID YOU KNOW?In Illinois alone, it is estimated that diesel exhaust triggers more than 20,000 asthma attacks, causes more than 680 heart attacks and leads to approximately 570 premature deaths each year. Although diesel pollution is unhealthy for everyone, children, seniors, occupational workers and people living with lung disease are especially at risk.
People already complain about BURNING LEAVES.
More Trains thru here will KILL THEM.

How many people will start screaming "not my town".
This town has had many opportunities and the town people have shut them down, hopefully this time this wont happen.

I don't see how it would increase the trains. We get every train now going to and coming from Chicago. There is a huge rail yard in Joliet. We would be so lucky if they would consider us for something like that. I find it hard to believe that anyone would object to this. It would take a substantial amount of land and would be something set up outside the city limits.

How would it increase the rail traiffic? I can see the increase in truck traffic but every train that comes through town would still be coming through here, some would just terminate here. Right now the container freight goes to Joliet or Cicero and the intermodal goes to Cicero or Corowith yards. At least that is the way it was set up. There could have been some changes in that. If we became an intermodal facility some of the trains would terminate here.

Won't be bad if the city can get a grant to help pay to build more overpasses or underpasses ,so people are not sitting there for 10minutes or more waiting to cross. Maybe getting idot to put an overpass or underpass on 18/main st.

Even if bnsf would agree to to take the section of tracks out from broadway to lundy and dig that area out down to 30-40ft and put the tracks back in,then idot would be able to put in a flat bridge over those tracks on main st and the city putting another bridge on bridge st.
Take a ride to Paxton il,and they have the tracks there about 40ft below ground level with a bridge going over the tracks for vehicles to pass.

Even if this proposal from the mayor doesn't pan out, city leaders are heading in the right direction for developing jobs and tax dollars for the city.
It has to come through our abundance of railway traffic.
I can remember old City Manager Don Crawford saying that there is a hub southwest of Streator. That hub is where MOST trains go through when they are heading west of the Mississippi River. That's ALOT of traffic which could and should mean $$$ for Streator!

. That's ALOT of traffic which could and should mean $$$ for Streator! Yes more money to Streator in the motor fuel tax funds. Cause there will be more people spending more money on gas that burned up sitting there waiting to cross the tracks. That's why I suggested they dig down to 30ft below ground level from broadway st to lundy st to relay the tracks and put in 2 flat bridges on main st and bridge st so no one has to sit to wait for the trains to pass to cross the tracks.

The sad truth is its people like this who complain and kill projects. I can see investors come into streator to talk about a project where they will spend $40 million dollars and.create a bunch of jobs and then someone in the audience stands up and complains about waiting for the trains!!!!!!!!! The investors question why they would invest their money here when other towns want jobs? Then they would leave. Meantime, the person who complains doesn't have a job in the first place and has all the time in the world to wait for a train!!!

Rocket, think about the 30' below grade idea.
Grade changes are difficult for trains and are avoided whenever possible.
The tracks would have to start going down a long way back; it would be a massive project.
I don't think that would ever happen.
I could however, see the increased economic benefits from an intermodal paying for an over pass and more.
I don't agree with Oldtimer much, but I think he is right about the untapped potential of our railroad.
