James W. Rexroad, 27, 1113 E. Main St., was cited at 1:57 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of East Hickory Street on a complaint of urinating in public. About 10 minutes later a few blocks away in an alley behind Monroe Street, Rexroad was cited again on complaints of illegal burning, littering and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was given a court date for all the complaints. - See more at: mywebtimes.com/archives/ottawa/display.php?id=483917#sthash.bfmdYd9I.dpuf

I'm sorry for Mr. Rexroad, but at his age he should have known better, and again at his age, it is better to learn now than later. And for the rest of us, this is a very big step in the proper direction, for an improved town for us to all enjoy. Some communities have been tolerant with behaviours that I consider unacceptable, (like public expression of spittle) while other communities don't even seem to be "looking the other way", simply because they don't see the behaviour as a problem, "it's always been done" so until the awareness is raised, matters continue in old ways. I was reminded of one of my favorite stories, on a Cspan broadcast a couple of days ago. The one about the young husband asking why his wife cut 2 inches off of the pot roast before cooking it, and her telling him it was how her Mom taught her, and the young wife asking her Mom why, and the Mom having to call Grandma, who was very confused and finally said, "OH, that, I have to do that because my roaster is too short for the cut I like to use." A "recipe" had been followed, inadvertently, due to someone failing to ask why for the practice they emulated, and it had been passed on to the next generation. Thank goodness for inquisitive young husbands.:-)
