The Times' Red Stocking annual Christmas fund drive begins today to take care of needy children in the area — as it has since 1923.
The goal this year is the same as last year, to raise $62,000 to help a growing number of needy children in our area.
Donations in 2012 totaled $105,148.36, topping the goal thanks to a $50,000 anonymous donation given in two parts of $25,000 each in memory of David John Morgan and David Phillip Hougas.
The fund also received $5,180 from the July 4, 2012, Pizza Party hosted with Bianchi's Pizza. Without the anonymous donation, however, the annual goal would not have been met.
Red Stocking delivered gifts last year to nearly 2,000 children in more than 800 families.
Many volunteers make this project a success each year. The Zonta Club of Ottawa, for many years, has done the buying and wrapping and coordinates delivery to an area that covers most of La Salle County.
The Streator Kiwanis Club oversees buying, wrapping and delivery in the Streator area.
Red Stocking donations are used for gifts of toys, games, books and some clothing and food items that go directly to children up to age 12 in needy families in The Times' circulation area.
Funds are not used for administrative or staffing expenses. Donations are not solicited door-to-door but are delivered or mailed to The Times' offices in Ottawa or Streator.
Volunteers deliver gifts each year. Delivery this year will be Saturday, Dec. 14. Details will be announced closer to the delivery date.
The program survives on donations from the communities served. Those who make donations are listed in the newspaper.
Besides donations, the names of the children who benefit also come from you. The deadline for submitting names of needy children is Monday, Dec. 2.
For more information on the program, contact Managing Editor Lonny Cain at lonnyc@mywebtimes.com.
