You made me look it up Dave. Another one I'd never guess, but football really wasn't my favorite sport like basketball and baseball was. I never touched a ball til I got to Streator in 1956. From then on I'd chase anything that bounced. I looked at some pictures of that '45 game and they sure looked cold.

Correct and the owner bought 50 acres in ....L.A.! They are on a one year lease to St. Louis now and could move back. Not a lot of folks have shown up for their games as of late. The NFL WANTS a team in this huge market again. Rams, Raiders and Chargers are the teams that have showed interest.

IDK I thought that L.A. would be a great place for thr Raiders, but it just did not work out. Once again, I am clueless as to why there is so many successful sports teams there, but no NFL team has been able to make a go of it.

Reading a mystery novel about a Lawyer. This was made into a very successful TV show back in the 60's. Who is the lawyer? Hey Della!

How many of the old ABA pro basketball teams can you name? Start w/ the ones who made it into the NBA. I saw Skip Thoren and Freeman play for the Miami Floridians. They played for the U of I. in college. They were playing the Dallas Chaparrals in 1969. Chaps went on to become the NBA champ Spurs in San Antonio.

Cliff Hagan (won title w/ St. Louis Hawks) and Cincy Powell were the big stars for the Chaps. They played at Moody Col. on the SMU campus. After half time they quit taking tickets and let anyone (even me ) in for free. Best player I ever saw was Rick Barry of the Oakland Oaks. A Man playing w/boys to me. Virginis Squires had Dr. J. back then.

There is a good documentary on Netflix about the St Louis Spirits and Marvin Barnes. I think 4 came in. You mentioned the first one. San Antonio Spurs Denver Nuggets New York/Jersey Nets Indiana PacersThe Kentucky Colonels and St. Louis Spirits were bought out when they merged. The owners of the Spirits got a SWEET TV deal that was designed to allow them a portion of the profits from the other former ABA teams in perpetuity. Back then the TV deal was peanuts. No one realized how much money that was going to be. They became multi-millionaires. There were LOTS of former ABA teams that moved around, changed names and ultimately folded prior to the merger. Carolina Cougars, Utah Stars, Floridians, San Diego Conquistadors all come to mind. I LOVED the old RED/White and Blue Basketball. We played with them all the time when I was young. They really had some great talent and a game style that flowed more. That style led to probably the greatest era of the NBA. Dr. J and George Gervin, Connie Hawkins and others from the ABA era opened the doors for Magic, Larry, MJ and the game as we know it today. I just looked it up. Yup, MM, Those are the four teams that made it to the NBA.

I used to go watch the Squires all the time. We'd buy the @2.00 nose bleed tickets and just keep moving down and most generally ended up own the floor level somewhere. Pretty easy unless they were on TV, then they make everybody sit on the side the cameras were going to roll on, just to make it look like a capacity crownd. I saw the first inter-league game ever played. Squires vs. the Baltimore Bullits in the Hampton Roads Coliseum. We bought the @2 ticket like usual and made are move and the place filled to the max, over 18,000 I believe. We ended up on the court under the basket and 1st row. The squires blew them off the floor. They had Dr. J., Charlies Scott, Fatty Taylor, Jumbo Jim Eakens, Doug Moe, a guy named Johnson. Baltimore had Jack Marin, Don Ohl, Earl Monroe, Wes Unseld, Jack Marin and jumping Gus Johnson. Dr. J. completely jumped over Unseld, who was going to take a charge, stuffed it so hard and the place went nuts. The Dr. had that big Afro, man could he jump when he first got out of college.......And yes Rick Barry just toyed with the players in the ABA, he was that good and could fire it from anywhere, his range was just unbelievable.

Yeah, the "kangaroo kid" jumped from Philly to the ABA and back to Philly. The teams were trying to lure the good ones with lots of money, don't know how many really got paid from some of the stories I've read........When I was in college we'd play ball on the blacktops with high school players from Charleston HS. One was a kid named Rex Morgan. He was 3-4 years younger than me and could really play. He ended up going to Jacksonville, played 1st string along with Artis Gilmore. The reporters all called him "Reckless Rex" Morgan and played one year with the Celtics. Jacksonville played for the national championship the year I was in Nam, so I never got to see him play on TV.
