Leo Durocher. Only know it because Pat Hughes talked about it during the last Cubs homestand.

I guess Steve Young/Joe Montana was another great example of a great QB waiting for an absolute legend to leave the limelight. Someone refresh my memory. .... back in tm to the Raiders. Wasn't Darryl Lamonica the starter? Ken Stabler the flamboyant young gun his backup, and an ANCIENT George Blanda Kicker and 3rd string QB? Didn't Blanda have something to do with scoring the game winning points in a bunch of playoff games for the Raiders? I just remember him being Mr Clutch for them several times one Season. I'm sure you are right on all those facts. Blanda was amazing. I think he was drafted by the Bears and went to the AFL when he could not start as QB. He taught himself how to be a pro field goal kicker and played into his 40's. (Still ready to go as a 3rd string QB.)

We only had one of the big name trains. Santa Fe's SUPER CHEIF! Fastest way from Chicago to Los Angeles. I was using this Q to bump for spam. My family would go meet it at the station around 7:30 PM or so in the Summertime. Then! Off to Silver Frost for a root beer .

Another big name train went through Ottawa. I rode it to Chicago one time. What was it's name?

Correct MM. I rode the Rock Island Rocket to Chicago once. Unfortunatley, it hit and killed a guy in a car about half way there. BTW Metra has been doing studies to extend this line from New Lennox to the Illinois Valley (La Salle?) so there may be a commuter train in our future.

That's very cool Dave. I heard one of our Politician's talk a few years ago about Metra looking to expand the Joliet line to Morris. If they do Morris, perhaps they would extend to Ottawa or L-P. That would open up opportunities, at least for viable commuters. It would be an easy ride to Chicago for a day at the museums or to a sporting event.

I used to take my kids to Chicago via Dwight when we visited their grandma and grandpa here in Streator. We could have breakfast here and then get on the train to see the museums, take a boat ride in the lake and then get back on the train and be home for dinner. I think this can still be done, thanks to the Illinois Lincoln service trains. One time, we stayed over night so my boy and I could see a Cubs game. If you want to really enjoy long distance travel, get a room. ALL your meals come w/the room. Plus there is coffee, juice and a morning paper not to mention a bathroom and shower. To us, it was worth the extra money.

That is traveling in style Dave. I think having a sleeper car is about 4 or 5x the money of just a seat. So a $250 ticket to the West coast might turn into a $1250 fare(per/person) Ahhhh...well one day when money is no object and no time restraints due to the daily demands of work and life in general......and no dogs or chickens or kids or grandkids to tend to. This link will give you all the info you need if you want to check out train travel in the USA. www.amtrak.com/home

OK, back to a question.....this should be an easy one for anyone that was living here in town back in the late 60's. Riverside businesses for $20: There was a commercial retail shop straight across from the Armory. It was in/behind a house, not IN Westgate. What kind of merchandise did they sell? Flowers?

Yup Dog, you got it. I remember it was affiliated with FTD...the flowers by wire folks....but for the life of me I don't remember the name of the shop. Hart's Florist I believe. Just give me a $20 credit for next years ice cream. Now that you are making it about money, I will play more often. Maybe a "daily double"?

Hart's Florist it is. I know because my older brother got a job working for them delivering flowers after high school. I was so jealous as he had a driver's license and a panel truck to drive. But they also did a big funeral parlor business and he saw a lot of dead people. That part was a little creepy for me, but not for my bro.
