I am in Illinois, not too far away from Streator. I was first planned in 1834, but the State didn't have the funds to build me. I was finally authorized by Congress in 1871. Construction finally began in 1892, but I was not ready until 1907. By the time I was finally built, I was obsolete before I opened, but in true Government fashion, I still operated until 1951. I stretch through 5 counties of Northwest Illinois and am 75.2 miles long. My 'little brother' stretches an additional 30 miles. Who/What/Where am I? The I&M canal and the Hennepin canal. Actually I will edit that. It is the Hennepin Canal and its feeder canal to the north.

You got it Dog, Hennepin Canal. They had the idea long ago, before the proliferation of rail and was still thought to be a cheaper way to ship even after tracks were laid. The problem was a lack of funds. When funds were finally appropriated and construction begun, it was nearly too late. By the time construction was finished, Engineers were making the locks wider and longer on the river than were installed on the canal. This really made it obsolete before it even opened. I have not taken advantage of it, but it is a State Park now offering Bicycle paths, boating, canoeing, fishing and snow mobiling. I don't think it is used all that much and it is not very far from home. Has anyone here on SO used the park much/ familiar with it? I have ridden the eastern end near Bureau Junction many times. Would like to ride it from Colona back if I could find someone to drop us off out there. I don't know what you consider a lot of use but I always see riders, walkers, and fisherman south of the Princeton area. Its nice and peaceful.

That's cool Dog, I am glad it is getting well used. The times I have passed by, I hadn't seen so many people but I have never actually been into the park to check it out. It's kind of amazing. They had to build that 'feeder canal' to get the water to make the system work. It stretches about 30 miles to the Rock River. I guess the Canal had to 'float uphill' so they needed water to make it work. Originally they had a number of aqueducts to pass the canal over other bodies of water? Yes, if you go on the I&M Canal I think there is at least one aquaduct near the LaSalle end.Its been a long time since I road Ottawa to the east, so I dont remember what is left of the aquaduct over the Fox River. If it is there, no water is in it.Its nice that they preserved a lot of it. It would be cool if they could do more and possibly re-water it. From about a mile east of Utica, to at least Marseilles, the canal is really grown over and filled in. Hard to recognize where the canal actually was.

OK history buffs, when JFK was shot and LBJ sworn in, who was then in turn next in line for Presidency if anything happened to LBJ? Most of us know that Ford was sworn in as VP when Agnew resigned, and just a few short months later became our first President that was not elected by the people. So who was next in line after LBJ after the Kennedy assassination? The Speaker of the House in 1963 was John William McCormack. I think he was older than LBJ.
