There is a post in Facebook that the St. Stephen's Parish Hall and gym are to be torn down due to the lack of maintenance. The building is 35 years old.
Does anyone know about this?

I hope not. I would love to buy/lease that from them. It would be great to have another big banquet hall.

That rumor has been going around for months. Any truth to it? I've heard that there are roof problems and that the kitchen is full of mold. I'm not surprised if demolition is planned. With the exceptions of the school and the St. Stephen's convent, the buildings owned by St. Michael Parish all appear to be falling apart owing to deferred maintenance. The whole thing is depressing. So many lies.

that would be a shame seeing that would be such a nice place with a little maintenance.

The peoria Diocese should not have taken all the money from them, and charge those ridiculous rates they were going to charge for tuition...Lots of people removed their kids from that school instead of paying that much money. What a waste.

All these guys care about is $$$, or, more accurately, blowing $$$. For example, $1.35 million to keep the pedo case in Normal quiet.

I look at St Anthony's twin bell/clock towers and just shake my head. What a shame they could not afford to keep the towers in good shape. When I win the Lotto.............

Looking at St. Anthony's just makes me ILL.......... take a look at St. Mary's church as well DD...it is really falling apart badly. AND the killer is that they just had to build a brand new rectory with a FULL stocked bar << of course that is a definite necessity for a few priests, ey? Plus they also had to build a brand new Lyceum building........ FOR WHAT? Does anyone even utilize that building for anything? Watching the whole Catholic society here literally crumbling ......... makes me sick. M

The parish has enough money to repair these churches and keep them going. I went to Immaculate Conception several times in 2010 before the merger went into effect. The church was probably 3/5 to 3/4 full every time I went there. Immaculate Conception Parish had quite a bit of money at the time of the merger. St. Michael Parish sends over $220,000 a year to Marquette High School. This parish is NOT broke. The ones in charge just gave the appearance that the old parishes were broke as a reason to merge the parishes.
A while back I went to the Episcopal church in Streator on a Sunday and found 12 people in the pews. And here the diocese closed Catholic churches in Streator that had several hundred in attendance on Sundays. The Streator consolidation has been based on fraud from day one. The leadership of the parish is destroying the Catholic Church in Streator.

The Leaders will have to answer Jesus the same as we do. We should pray that the Bishop does not close our churches eventually. Even though $1,000,000 a year is donated to the parish, the Bishop does NOT like Streatorites and won't allow any money to spent on our buildings. St. Columba is getting a major workover. I am sure it needed it. And Ottawa has 4 open Catholic Churches. And Streatorites help to support Ottawa Grade School. People in Ottawa should send money to Streator.
Ottawa's hospital has a catholic priest and Streator has a loyal noncatholic leader of faith.
Surely it is not because $1,000,000 a year is not enough money.

There's a big grudge against Streator among some at the top of the diocesan bureaucracy in Peoria. I think the current pastor has been ordered not to spend money on maintaining church buildings. Jenky probably was turned against Streator by the anti-Streator clique in Peoria. Doesn't say much for a supposed spiritual leader when he blindly despises an entire town. Streator's hospital always has been Catholic; very rarely is there Mass at the Streator hospital. Meanwhile, the Ottawa hospital recently became Catholic and got a full-time chaplain. Why do people continue to donate to a shadowy institution whose leaders probably ridicule this town all the way to the bank?

I still think the empty churches would make great gambling casinos and restaurants, and the gym got to be of use to somebody, maybe the city could sell anderson fields and then buy the gym for a community center; the priest mansion could be a bed and breakfast to house the patrons of the new gambling houses; though if we go with the gambling theme we might have to get rid of the chickens, they would make us a little too hick like for the tourist.
