Fyi this virus came from this forum board. I am borrowing someone's computer till mine gets fixed. This virus locks everything on the PC and you can't do anything. Someone should contact proboards to tell them about this virus being in their system. PC tech said this is a hard virus to get rid of.

shut down your computer and reboot, without opening a browser look for any files that were installed recently that you didn't do and delete them.(or uninstall)..usually the problem....

If it's the FBI virus that got me, I couldn't do anything but shut it down. It froze mine up completely. I was using google and bam, it came up on the screen. This one said I could spend I think $250 with some sort of pay card. It also said I was subject to imprisonment and a $10K fine. Didn't seem right to me that they'd freeze me up and then let me off. It's a bad virus and I had to replace the hard drive.

FBI ransomware virus starts with popup and secret download, police warn By Gitte Laasby of the Journal Sentinel Aug. 1, 2013 | (10) Comments We've written about the FBI Moneypak ransomware virus before, but we got a few new pieces of info in a press release from the Brown County Sheriff's Office this week that I wanted to share with you. The purported FBI popup message is really a Trojan in disguise that locks your computer system. The message cites copyright laws and criminal code violations and states that the user has done something illegal, such as downloading or distributing copyrighted material, viewing child pornography or distributing spam. The message also states that the user can avoid prosecution if he or she pays a fine of a few hundred dollars by Moneypak card within a short period of time. The user could go to jail if the fine isn't paid in time, according to the message. We already knew that the virus attempts to obtain passwords and other financial information stored on the computer. But the Brown County Sheriff's Office now says the virus also appears to be able to take snapshots from the computer's built-in web cam inside the user's home. The sheriff's office warns that the virus needs to be removed because the computer owner's private material and computer system functionality is at very high risk. "If the infected computer is powered on and connected to the internet, Trojans have complete control of the computer and every piece of stored data," the news release stated. Be careful about clicking on anything if you get the ransomware message, the warning said: The FBI Moneypak Ransomware tricks people by displaying pop-up ads that look like regular Windows notifications and ask people to click on a "yes" or "no" button. Regardless what people click on, a download starts and the FBI Moneypak Ransomware is installed in people's computer system. How do you detect the virus? If you get the pop-up fake FBI message, or you can't start any programs or applications even after having rebooted your computer several times, you may have the virus. Same thing goes if you can't unlock your computer. "If you feel your computer has already been infected by this or any similar virus, please shut down and unplug your computer," the news release stated. "You may also want to consider consulting with a commercial computer expert." Also: Immediately delete any emails from sources you don't know. For some tips on how you can avoid getting the ransomware virus in the first place, see my blog post from September.
