Streator is the only place that I have lived that does not have municipal water service. Phoenix, Flagstaff, Payson, Los Angeles, and Denver all had City water services.
In Springville, NY, a village of about 4300, there was not only municipal water, but their own electric company, with residents paying about one fourth that of neighboring communities. I couldn't believe how low my electric bills were there.
So how did it come about that Streator doesn't have a municipal water system? Was running water in every household too progressive of an idea for City leaders, so people went without until a private company stepped up to make the investment in Streator?

Many years ago, the City leaders voted to privatize the Water and Waste Water facilities in this town. The private companies always promise low costs and a huge cost savings to the Cities in the beginning and then the rates just keep raising through the years. City of Chicago parking meter privatization is a good example and then the City loses control over the cost and operation.

Some towns that I recall are Pontiac, Peoria, Urbana, Champaign, Sterling for a few.
What I always considered was the volume and pressure available for industrial fire fighting. Even our WalMart had to install a pump and tank due to low volume for their sprinkler systems.
You should have about 3 times average daily use stored in storage tanks, standpipes or gravity tanks.

Are you saying that for an employer to locate in our industrial park/farm field, they would need to build a tank as well?
I would think that would be an extra expense to put in the negative column when considering coming here.
Could that be another example of possible infrastructure that could be added to make our community more attractive to potential employers?
I am convinced that there is a lot more that could be done if our City administration were really interested in bringing jobs here.

I'm not whining, just talking about it. The things that need to be done, need to be done by the City. That is why I am trying to convince more members of the city that we need to elect more progressive leaders.

It wasn't put to a vote by the people?

I can tell you this living in AR is a lot and I mean A LOT Cheaper. Lets See here got my first Water and Sewer Bill for my Apt as I pay for those here. In Streator monthly those were about 100 a month Down here try 30 a month. Gas I can get for 310 a Gallon. Groceries even without an Alidi's to rely on I am spending less on food than up north. Car Insurance is Cheaper even with Everyone REQUIRED to have 100K in Liability insurance and if your caught without insurance both your Tags and DL are SUSPENDED.
Oh Yeah the Big one NO SCHOOL FEES FOR ANYONE regardless of INCOME. Then we have the School Supply list instead of it taking 3 Pages it was 1 page for both of my kids COMBINED we spent less than 40 Bucks on BOTH of their Supplies. Registration on a car is 27 a year unless it is a PU then it is 40 a year. Best part about living down here is this THINGS TO DO BESIDES WATCH the CITY IMPLODE.

Streator has never owned the water company. It has been private since way back in the early days.

Myself, you seem to be on some sort of negative thing against the city of Streator? Your belief is that we need fiber optics to attract business and we need the city to own the water company for us to attract business? Is this your deal on this message board? To ride the asses of the city leaders?

A municipal water company is not much of an option now.
I think attracting jobs could be just one of the benefits we could get from a municipal fiber network.
I do not like the direction Streator has been heading.
I feel getting a more progressive leadership elected is needed.

This is the only practical option available for municipal owned utilities, right? You aren't advocating getting a progressive leadership that would actively pursue changing our electric, water, and other similar utilities to a municipal type system are you?

Give some names of people living in streator who should definitely run for city council!!
