Mosquitoes collected in Streator earlier this week tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the La Salle County Health Department. This is the first documented West Nile virus activity in La Salle County this year. "This is the time of year we expect to see West Nile virus activity increase, especially with the dry hot weather we have experienced recently,"said Director of Environmental Health Ted Pumo. "It is imperative that people be very conscientious about self-protection whenever they are outside during the evening hours. The best way to protect yourself against illness is to wear insect repellent and to get rid of any stagnant water around your home to reduce the number of mosquitoes." West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. Common West Nile virus symptoms include:fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks. However, four out of five people infected with West Nile will not show any symptoms. In rare cases, severe illness, including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death, can occur. People older than 50 are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus. The health department would like to remind the public to report any dead crows, blue jays, robins, perching birds, or potential mosquito breeding sites to the department at 815-433-3366. More information is available online at www.lasallecounty.org/hd, and www.idph.state.il.us/envhealth/wnv.htm.

I had encephalitis in 1981 from a mosquito. Not fun. I think standing water is a big factor. Look around your property and take precautions.

My citronnella plant is huge. I wish i would've gotten one for each corner of the deck, though.

It seems to help, but a couple more would be better still.

Homemade Mosquito Repellant
1/2 litre of Rubbing Alcohol
100 Grams of Whole Cloves
100 ml of Baby Oil
Directions......
Let Whole Cloves marinate in the Alcohol for "4 days" Stirring in the morning and evening
After the 4 Days add the Baby Oil, mix and it's ready to use.
Use by drops to cover the entire body.
I received this recipe from my Daughter In-law who is from Brazil.
I'm sorry I don't have the trans difference from meters and grams but I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to look up on line.
I myself refuse to put chemicals on my body and at my age after being a kid who was constantly exposed to mosquito Bites during the summer months in Minnesota. I have NO reaction to mosquito bites / stings. I used to watch them on my arm or leg, see their bodies fill with my blood, then watch their swollen bodies fly off when they were full and had enough of my blood. I would have NO reaction of any kind. NO red marks, swelling, or itching from where the mosquito's would sting.
I am NOT this crazy to let it happen anymore since West Nile; yet I refuse to put chemicals on my body such as DEET. My husband showers before bed when he uses these chemicals on himself, he respects my feelings about the use of chemicals on the human body. I have seen what my husband is going through from years of being exposed to harsh chemicals and there is NO WAY I will use chemicals on myself or watch it put on my Grands.
I think this is worth trying, since Brazil is renowned for it's Rain Forrest I trust it works; or at least it's worth a try if you feel the same about chemicals on your body as I do !

That is why I am glad for the bats in my back 40, as well as the dragonflies. Standing water is a huge issue. Thanx for posting all this info!!
