i get all my stuff at Krogers. Have never had a problem with quality of cakes or what I order. I do like the other bakery's donuts but I am not going it at 6 am in order to have a real selection.

I know this is weird but I'd love to stop on my way into work in the morning at their Ottawa location but I just can't get past that it's in a former funeral home. Something about purchasing food in that location turns my stomach. I think about it every time I pass there.

They should have their motto in Ottawa be "Our donuts are to die for".

And what was it called, or who owned it? That must have either been a very long time ago, or a quickly changing scene, as I have NO recall of such a business operating at that corner, well not during the past 42 years anyway. I believe you are correct as others have the same information, but I must have "fallen asleep" for a time like RipVanWinkle and missed that situation. Had to have been long ago, as that's been a busy corner for as long as I've known about it. Thanks for the lesson in Ottawa history. I always love learning little known facts that just slip under the linoleum, and get forgotten.

I believe the funeral home was Liptak's. I was but a child back then so I can't say how many years back. I am going to guess 45 years.

Thank you, ladies. Yes, I learned about the theatre, here in Streator, having been a funeral home, some years ago. My surprise was learning that the new Steve's in Ottawa was once a funeral home. I'd never heard that before, and just wondered if anyone knew the name of the establishment or the name of the owners. I thought Julie might recall more of the stats.

I know Eva. We have the two separate conversations going on here about funeral homes. I don't remember the home Steve's is now located in being a former funeral home but it's an old house so anything is possible.

True Anon. I love knowing some of the history of those old houses, and this is one bit of info I'd never heard about before.

Yep, you guys are right at the Granada Theatre addition to the Majestic was in fact Liptak's funeral home, my grand parents, and one uncle were waked there. BUT I will tell you though that the upstairs is creepier yet because it was the former Odd Fellow's Hall way back when. Even my father was quite vague about what exactly the Odd Fellows did, as both his father and grand father belonged to this organization. I have several of their "ritual" items from that hall that they used during their secret ceremonies....*winks* M

I agree, Steve's donuts are the best around, but like another poster mentioned, I'm just too lazy to get up early enough to go there and choose the ones I like, so I rarely have them. When we have certain houseguests we make sure we get a couple dozen of Steve's to serve with coffee, but otherwise not too often. But, they are delicious.

Isn't Hanks a refurbished barn? I don't know for sure, but I think so. I love those strange shaped hexagon buildings that they have there too on the property, I forget exactly what they are called. I would love to tour and see the inside of one of those. M
