Has anyone else had issues with them not fulfilling orders like you specify? This has happened to me twice in the past 6 months. I love their food, I think they are great for our community, but they are going start losing business if they promise orders and don't fulfill them. I ordered a cake from them for my daughters birthday 6 months ago. I specified design and what I wanted the cake to say. The day before the party, an employee (not the owner) called to tell me that the cake waiting for me was only decorated with large roses (not what I ordered) and had no writing on it. The owners wouldn't come back and put "Happy Birthday *******" on it for me and didn't offer me any discount, so I chose to pass and not get the cake at all. I ended up making my own. This week I ordered a batch of cookies for my son to take to school for his birthday. They were basic smiley face cookies, I was told I could pick any color and my son asked for blue. I got a call today saying they didnt make my order but they took some yellow cookies out of the case and boxed them for me. I went and got them because it wasn't a big deal on color, but it is slightly annoying.
My intention is not to start a bakery backlash. Im just voicing a frustration. We will still go there when we are in the mood for a special treat, but we wont be ordering from them anymore. My hope is that someone who knows them will let them know that their decision to not read or not prepare properly is going to cost them business.
Im sure there is an onslaught of "don't talk bad about local businesses" comments coming my way, and that's ok. Sometimes you have to ruffle some feathers and talk about poor customer service.

I love the place. They work hard and it's their goal to run out everyday and have the least amount of waste.

I worked there when I was in high school and it was a nice job and I agree that they work very hard. They make a quality product for a good price. However, That doesn't excuse botched orders though. Just my opinion.

If this is true Steve's should be ashamed of themselves, letting down the people that allowed them to grow into two markets. I've noticed the selection has dwindled over the years, I love their caramel pecan rolls only to rarely find them. I would be up there by 6:30 a.m. and no pecan rolls. I asked the lady behind the counter and she said they don't always make them..... Why would you not always make a good seller.... ?? I have often thought that they need some competition wish I knew how to bake......lol

This bakery had a store downtown Peru. I don't know if it closed when they opened the Ottawa store.
Does Ottawa have a bigger and different products baked than Streator.
Usually all that I see are donuts and some rolls.
I also don't think Kroger's can compare to Steve's.

I never had an order issue with Steve's, however I rarely had the need make an advanced order, however I noticed their service and product selection declined when they opened the Ottawa store. I will say there is nothing better then a homemade bakery treat, sadly in bigger cities, you are limited to the chain locations (Tim Horton's, Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme). There are few smaller independent shops, but the drive across the big city doesn't justify it. Steve's is one of the highlights and a must stop whenever I return to Streator for a visit.

Wait, I just reviewed my post and realized that I was in error. I mean we all know that eventually according to MYSELF (KYLE) that Steve's must be making mistakes on orders and have limited product selection because of the city's unfriendly business attitude and practices. It is a master plan of corruption designed to take down all of the businesses in town. I am sure there is an ordinance and regulation that states a bakery can only sell a certain type of doughnut on a certain day and in a set number of quantities. It won't be long until the store folds and a vacant building exists....ALL because it's the city's fault according to the WORD OF KYLE. DISCLAIMER: The above post was filled with nothing more then sarcasm for your entertainment

In the late 90's we had some Chicago clients coming to town for a project we were working on for them. They were amazed at Steve's doughnuts, Joe's Pizza, and Smitty's tenderloins. Something else I found interesting as local food combinations go, a work associate from Ohio moved here and had never heard of fried chicken and spaghetti served together, it soon became one of his favorite meals......lol

From what I have seen Kyle has been screwed by the city leaders and the only people that are poking fun at it, are part of that clan at city hall, or was part of it at one time. Eventually the good ol boy network, will be flushed pretty soon, just like the shiit going down the sewer where they belong. We already have one of the highest sewer rates in the state, wonder if they will charge more for all the shiit that goes down it when we oust them idiots?

I wonder if they are spreading themselves too thin by operating 2-3 locations? I hope they work out the kinks soon.
