I heard on the radio this morning that the city council meeting today will have some "hot" topics ranging from the business signs to the parking lot at Owens. I just don't understand why it seems there is always an obstacle that a business encounters here in Streator. As a community, I feel we all should be willing to put up with an "inconvenience" in our neighborhood or downtown to make it as easy as possible to get and/or keep a business here in town. I realize that those around Owens do not want all the dust the trucks might stir up.....but if you want to live in a neighborhood that really "stinks".....then live within a six block radius of the sewage plant at the end of Grant.....

I don't think that the "dust" is/was the problem at Owens. Maybe a little side note.
I think trucks parking/idling at night w/ headlights pointing at houses was a concern for a resident or two. They put up a pretty nice fence and I think changed where they park some trucks. Seems like a good solution. Heard they might even do improvements to the lots. That sounds nice too.

Growing up, we lived two houses from the Santa Fe train tracks. Yea, it was really annoying when the train interrupted my favorite TV show, but it never bothered my sleeping. It was a sound that was just part of our living there. Again, I am not saying it won't be perfect, but at least Owens is still a Streator business.

If these signs was bashing other people or businesses then it should be dealt with but for advertsing or location of a business than leave them alone. To me the city council wants to only support certain business/people and the ones that they don't want to support they will make it difficult to stay around this town. I think that if we have a business in this town whether old or new the city council should be one of the first to welcome all with open arms but in reality this is not going to do this. This is only my opinion from different things I have noticed from the 14 years that I have lived in this town..

Capncruch, you are exactly right on that post. They only care about what is in there own personal best interest. I figured they would try and put up another golf course that will never make money.....It is outrages me what they do and get away with it.

What they get away. For one thing, it's the voters fault for not voting new people in to start with. By not voting in new people just encourages the old city council to continue on what they are doing. The city council people chases people and businesses out of this town. In reality I am surprised that they have not chased WalMart out. The city council have chased out Target and Mernards out of this town. Also awhile back in the times there was an article about businesses owner encouraging business people to stay in out of town motels instead of the local. So that was an example. And the possiblity of closing Marilla Park just because the city does not want to take the responsilbity of the care take of a park is another example. There are alot of people that enjoy that Park. Streator could actually be a thriving town again if the city council and mayor would support and encourage businesses to come to this town. I also know of another person that attempted to have a business here in town but gotten told by the city manager that he will not survive in this town and that the city council will make sure of it. So until the time that the voters actually vote in new people this town will continue to go down hill. Because in reality the people that are on the city council only care about what they, themselves, wants and don't care about the needs and wants of the actual residents of Streator. Yes I do shop in Streator, ate at the restaurants in Streator, and also buy gas in Streator. But also will shop out of Streator first every chance I can get because of the attitudes of the employees in the Streator stores and restaurants.

I have never heard anything about a Target or a Menards even attempting to come to Streator.
In my opinion Streator has to much of a "not in my backyard" mentality, it is not only the city council who tries to keep business out, I have been back for 20 years and in this time, I have seen petitions going around to keep out a prison, an ethonal plant, can't remember what they wanted to put in on Vermillion St. but that caused an uproar, we can all sit and whine and complain and blame everyone else all we want, but if we want this town to grow and improve we are going to have to deal with change. People on here say oh this resturaunt or that should come here, really, unless it has McDonalds prices then everyone will complain that it is too expensive. I understand we were raised with small town attitudes and I came back here from the city to raise my children in a place that was friendly and safe, but at the rate we are going we are going to have no town at all.
