ONONDAGA, N.Y. -- Police say a motorcyclist who was participating in a protest ride against helmet laws in upstate New York has died after he went over the handlebars and hit his head on the pavement. The accident happened Saturday afternoon in Onondaga, a town in central New York near Syracuse. State troopers tell The Post-Standard newspaper of Syracuse that 55-year-old Parish resident Philip A. Contos was driving a 1983 Harley-Davidson with a group of bikers who were protesting helmet laws by not wearing helmets. Troopers say Contos hit his brakes and the motorcycle fishtailed and went out of control. They say Contos flipped over the handlebars and was pronounced dead at a hospital. Troopers say Contos likely would have survived if he'd been wearing a helmet. Read more: www.pantagraph.com/news/national/article_81367980-a5c6-11e0-bac4-001cc4c03286.html#ixzz1R5OXuYLV

i've seen it both ways, wearing or not wearing has saved my brother's life "twice". my brother hit a semi head on. he fell asleep at the wheel and fell into the passenger seat, sleeping. when the semi ran over the drivers seat it only dislocated is leg and grabbed his arm. it did not crush him being he wasn't sitting in a seat belt. on the other hand he's been in seat belt avoiding thrown out of an airborne car before, too. if it's your time to go, you're going to go. i'm expecting this guy left life the way he wanted to. on his harley w no helmet.

If you're 18 and can go fight and maybe die for this country, IMO, you have the right to choose whether to wear a helmet or a seatbelt. Under that age, you do not have that right. I choose not to wear a helmet, and know I may die if GOD forbid I am ever in a serious accident, but my children who ride with me, they do wear a helmet.

it should be the riders choice to wear or not.

I agree. It should be the riders choice. As an adult. But, having made that decision, when that said rider has a head injury and DOESN'T die, but suffers a traumatic brain injury, and can no longer work, and support himself, who's responsible? For their support and care? Who's going to wipe your butt? Do you think that it should be like a waiver...if you choose not to wear helmet/seatbelt, then you waive any responsibility by others to care for you? I myself have never worn one, but I've seen/cared for more head injuries recently, than in my entire career. I would love to tell you what their views on helmets/safety were NOW, but that would be in violation of HIPPA. Myself, I might be rethinking helmets.

I will sign that waiver as soon as people bearing children sign a waiver to provide their every needs , due the math , compare head injuries picked up by the state to children that the state provides for and you will see why I think this is rediculous .

Tco...lol, while I mentioned care in the monetary sense, I also included the broader sense, of total care. And the loss of privacy, dignity. (See, "who's going to wipe your butt") While most men loudly proclaim its their choice to live or die, and die doing what they want, death isn't always the outcome.

Helmets give a FALSE SENSE of security as well as obscure your vision, impair your hearing, put an extreme strain on your neck and get you fatigued quicker.
HELMETS SUCK.
I choose NOT to wear one just for these reasons.

I've seen a lot of younger riders wearing helmets. Especially the newer helmets.
