Better start getting different doctor outside of Streator. I just went for some lab work this morning. Yes. I know too early. But according to the staff members in lab, OSF is buying St. Mary's. And the only departments that are staying open is the Emergency room and the lab. According to the staff member the rest of the floors will be shut down.
If that is the case than why don't OSF just demolish most of the hospital except the first floor area?

They're probably going to see how many people they have to ambulance to another hospital. Then they'll see if it justifies opening up floors. Meantime, the bills will be higher because of the ambulance.

I do doubt that they re-open the entire Hospital, any more than BroMen would. I believe they will get the place back up to snuff and then see what is required to serve Streator. Pontiac hospital is only 2 stories BTW...... Perhaps in Streator they built just a wee bit big for the need?

You know how bits and pieces of what you hear turn into rumor out of proportion and totally off. I'm sure that the powers that be are NOT discussing any negotiations with staff. Anyway even if they didn't sell the hospital isn't operating at full occupancy anyway. Why would another owner coming in change that? would everyone suddenly get ill/injured and fill all the rooms just because someone else owns it? I don't think so. It would make sense to close much of it regardless who owns it.

I was thinking the same thing Dog. I thought it has been horribly under-utilized for decades. Entire floors unused and I remember when the cafeteria was busy. The OLD Hospital seems like it has just sort of sat there too. Fill that baby up. Start renting some rooms and serving some meals, don't just let it sit empty. How about a novel idea.....charge prices people can afford, fill it up and operate efficiently.....at capacity..... Price wars for healthcare....... Start eating into the Ottawa and Pontiac market. Heck, lower those prices way down and get them driving in from miles around. Medical services need a reboot anyway. Residents would have quick access to emergency help if needed. They also wouldn't need to be transported for testing, etc. It would be all under one roof. Occupancy would also remain more stable: weeks or months at a time, rather than hours or days. The building is already ADA compliant and perfect for elderly residents.

Maybe an extra value menu? I agree with your idea of renting out rooms as a nursing home, but they ain't going to drop health care prices, ever. If/when the hospital closes it makes perfect sense for a company that runs nursing homes to buy the building. It's all set up to become a big nursing home with onsite rehab, etc. and, the prices to rent a room will be outrageous. No "price wars"

We are so wasteful. I bet the old Hospital in Pontiac would have been useful for something but was demolished. I go past a recently abandoned Hospital on the East side in Joliet frequently too. These are million dollar facilities that have been well maintained. Why couldn't they be used for SOMETHING? We have homeless Vets, mentally disturbed people or thousands of people that are displaced and fallen through some of the social safety nets. We pay people for doing nothing. Couldn't they partially staff those facilities, do some good for others? There are needs out there that buildings like this could help fulfill and yet they sit and deteriorate or we tear them down. Decaying like our Nation itself. Look at our beautiful Catholic churches going to ruin!!!

Is there anything going on w/ the hospital in Dwight? Everytime I drive by, I'm still not sure if it is open. I think at one time it was a VA hospital.

I was just reading the web times site and entered in the drawing for a new 10 inch tablet being given away by OSF hospital in Ottawa. after I entered my entry there was a poll popping up concerning if an OSF hospital closed in your town would you drive to the next nearest OSF hospital for treatment. sounds kind of weird seeing they are trying to purchase St. Mary's hospital. did anyone else enter for the drawing and get this same poll question?

That can't be possible. That would mean that the city was truly being proactive in keeping the hospital open. Can't be right. That would mean everyone that bitched about the city was wrong.
