I am a bit curious about the taxes collected from areas South of 12th St., but annexed into the City.(like Vactor, Plymouth Tube, Transco, Water Co.) They are in Woodland District, but now part of the City. Does the Streator Districts get any property tax dollars at all from those particular places? Is it split between Woodland and Streator Districts? Anyone know? That's a very good question you pose MM. One that I am sure enquiring minds would like to have answered. Just why is it that South Streator does not get to keep the good things that come their way....I mean, there is probably a reason why they located in South Streator to begin with and then to be annexed into "The City" It's kind of like East St. Louis. Was it annexed into St. Louis and now that section of Illinois really belongs to Missouri now? How about Chicago? Just where are the ends of an octopus' tentacles?

When those places south of 12th St annex into the city they become part of the city and pay additional city taxes. They remain in the woodland district and only pay school taxes to them.

The homes that are on Airport road are in the Ransom School district and do not go to Streator Grade Schools because of that. Some have chosen to send their children to Catholic schools rather than bus to Ransom.

Just because they are in the City does not mean they are in the school district. Streater Grade school district lost in the courts and Ransom retains the tax on those homes. I know this to be fact and FOT probably knows that. I know an owner in the situation that built out there and when the kids got old enough to go to school is when they found out they would have to go to Ransom. They instead sent their kids to St. Anthony's ( don't know the name they're going by now ). Yes they are in the city, have city services and sewer but not the right to go to school in Streator until they go to high school.

Correct Wiily. Our district actually goes to the end of Thomas Addition and then over to Fuller Ave. I just say Airport Rd because its easier to explain.

What a gol danged convoluted mess. It's no wonder the government ranks are swollen to the bursting point. Trying to keep track of who belongs where and who pays who for what and how much.....there has got to be a simpler way to take care of all this. There is just so much room for error and money flying around from one taxing body to another and those trying to keep track of it all....it's no wonder Illinois is in such a mess!

I have a daughter that has to girls in the Ransom district. Nothing negative about the district. Sherman School is so much closer for some of the folks than it is to go to Ransom. It just becomes a personal choice for those involved.

I've given advice that maybe those involved should attempt to petition out of the Ransom district if they choose. The argument that they could use are: they do their shopping in Streator; go to church in Streator; live in the City; and most of their friends and children friends are in Streator. They'll have court costs and may not win, but the flip side, the cost of tuition at the catholic school will probably exceed the costs of going to court. The fight isn't so much the taxes generated from the homes but how much the district in Ransom will get from the state (maybe) for the kids over the 8 years they will be in Ransom school district. And they may not win, it's decided in the courts and the best argument may not win.

We were going to get stuffed into Northlawn, no way in hades. And for those on Airport road who might decide to fight to get their kids into Streator, don't forget your kids might also get stuffed into Northlawn......

About 30 years ago when I was taking a Political Science class at IVCC our instructor told us that Illinois had more units of government than any other State. More than Texas, more than California or New York. Fire protection districts, park districts, school districts, cities, townships, counties, library districts, on and on and on and on and all of them may have different boundaries and surely all of them have budgets, most of them have some kind of buildings, equipment or staff. I am sure it is not the most efficient way to do things. About ten years ago California passed us with more taxing bodies. Still, Illinois has too much. Start by eliminating township government.

its hard to get a union to give back something they have gotten even if it means losing a few members. the motto of the unions is sacrifice a few for the good of many. Since membership has fallen to under 11 percent, i would say they sacrificed the good of the many for the plunder of a few........ But hey, I am just a naysaying sky is falling kind of guy........ I am union, but let me tell you this is not the union of yesteryear. Don't ask what your union can do for you, what can you do for your union. Union is just another big business these days. The true union person these days is more interested in climbing the union ladder right on up to the national level, much the same as most lowly corporate individuals aspire to climb the corporate ladder to get to one of the sought after positions near or at the top. everyone else(Me included) are just peons...stepping stones for those seeking a tasty piece of the union or corporate pie at the top. My reward comes when I am only accountable to myself. Retirement will set you free. Just hope the government doesn't have any plans coming up to help me decide what I want to do with my retirement savings.
