Don't you think that society has changed a little in that 60 years? In most of society isn't such violence much less acceptable now? If you go back a little further back, keeping slaves in line with violence was acceptable in our country too. We aren't in the 50's and 60's, a lot of things have happened since then, our society has evolved and hopefully has learned to treat one another better. In this day and age, I don't see a City leader suggesting violence against someone just because he doesn't like what they have to say as being part of that evolution. Just my one insignificant opinion though. Society HAS changed in the last 60 years but not all of it has been good. I actually think that society has accepted and is exposed toviolence more now. Look at the reports of people pouring acid on others and beating up seniors for the SS checks or shooting a kid for his Air Jordans or coat. In many instances we have become MORE violent, not less. Look at the industry you work in and profit from. How many acts of violence are portrayed in the movies you show? Look at Big Daddy with Adam Sandler. The ads for it showed Sandler and a small boy urinating in public against the side of a building. It seems to me that the movie industry doesn't think of it as a problem. I would bet you probably showed the movie and displayed the poster for that movie. With all the violence in movies and video games, the entertainment industry and YOU profit from, and promote violence, much more than bar fights that have been occurring probably from the day that bars came into existence. Isnt it sorta hypocritical of you to profit from glorifying acts of violence and illegal activities by showing them on the big screen? No, I didn't show Big Daddy, but what difference would that make? It's not like I made the movie. It's not like I would necessarily even know what is in the movie before booking it. You don't think that the film companies give small theatre owners a chance to see the product before they play it, do you? I was watching the news this morning and saw that Sony is "allowing theatre to opt out" of showing the interview. Isn't that sweet of them? They pushed the envelope on portraying violence against others in the name of profits so much that there have been threats of violence towards movie-goers who may go to see it, so now they will let theatre owners out of forcing them to play their product. Yeah, its called block booking, another outlawed, unfair trade practice that the studios routinely use. You didn't think that theatres owners just get to pick what movies they play, did you? Yes, they have some control over it, but then pay a much higher price. I opened the Majestic with a documentary about air guitar competitions. It wasn't because I didn't ask for Shrek 3 or one of the other family films opening that summer. When 20th Century Fox told me that they had Die Hard ? (whatever number) for me, how many years do you think it would have been before I got another film from them if I told them that I thought it might be too violent? Yes, I agree that entertainment has gotten more violent, but that wasn't the question was it? Aren't people supposed to know that there is a difference between the movies and real life? Yes, you could see it as hypocritical, but I see a big difference between providing entertainment with some violence and a City leader suggesting it on others. If you look back at what was played at the Majestic while I was there though, you might see that I really tried to concentrate on the family product and also played some faith based and positive message films as well. The question being raised was whether or not committing and suggesting violence against others in real life and individuals deciding who deserves beat downs is acceptable.

I don't know...hasn't anyone seen The Tourist? Sometimes a tourist is not who they appear to be. Maybe call The Majestic or Northpoint Cinemas and see if they'll do a special showing of it.

To the surprise of many, and despite the opinions of this poll, I decided to fight ZERO tourists every week. And look what has hapened! ALM is expanding and the city received $400k to develop the Vermillion River front. Perhaps things aren't as bad as they seem...perhaps, just perhaps, I never fought any tourists at all.
If I use my powers for good, maybe good things will happen. It could be the dawn of a new day in Streator. It could be...whatever we want it to be.
Respectfully yours,
Mayor Lansford
P.S. Don't pissed me off or the tourist fighting will resume. That is all.
P.S.S. Read the paper now and then or don't act as if you know what's happening.

Wow, all of that happened because just one person in the community decided not to fight tourists, that is amazing! I commend you for that Mayor Lansford. After seeing the results of just one person refraining from fighting, can't you just imagine all the other positive things that could happen if you were to also take action to cut down on the number of fights from others as well? After all, you are one of the only ones with the real "powers" to do that, right? Maybe our Mayor coming out publicly at a Council Meeting to say that our City does not condone the violence and is committed to controlling it, would make other City leaders not feel so comfortable suggesting that it is so acceptable here, would discourage some from instigating more of it, and would let our community prosper even more. Don't you think? I have read the paper often for many years. The problem is when people do think that they know what's happening because they've read it. The paper can only print what you don't hide from them, right?

Bumping for helencrump so that she can see that even our Mayor (or a strong supporter of his) and others do promote violence as acceptable in Streator.

ok...ok....now I know what this is all about. When you (Kyle) were running the theater, you felt it was your "moral obligation" to give Streator a steady diet of what movies you thought would help Streator conform to your "Moral Standards". Yeah...I bet you had to really grit your teeth when they would send you what you would deem as a violent, morally deficient without the warm and fuzzy puppy dog feel to it movie. Helloooooo...McFligh?....anybody home? People pay good money to see people getting their a$$ whooped...UFC ring a bell? And that is for real! Not like the play acting in a Die Hard film or whatever. But here....in Streator....you can get that for free. Maybe that is what you perceive to be your real beef.....missing out on revenues because some people opted to watch the "Real" show? Maybe this is really just a good idea for our city's up and coming "Business Incubator". Golden Gloves boxing evolved. No Joke! This idea does have potential if you just think about it. Ya got some beef with someone?...Ya want to get it settled?...Sign up for the the Streator Fights. Promote it. There could be signup sheets in every local bar. Think yer a bada$$, then sign up. Those who advance go on to the fight of the week, and then the fight of the month culminating with the fight of the year.
