From what I understand(yes, more weasel words), at least tax payers aren't still on the hook for the liabilities that our City creates.
Did I miss our City's announcement and the press coverage on a switch from being self-insured to again using a municipal insurance group? I would have taken the opportunity to commend them for that.
From what I heard, we were incurring "considerable" extra expense from being self insured, and it is no wonder with the way they fail to take care of many problems.
So, can someone provide the article on the change, or should I send Derek an e-mail to ask if he could look into the change and how considerable the extra costs were?

compared to our elected officials stopping a business and controlling an election? That's a strong accusation there.

compared to our elected officials stopping a business and controlling an election? That's a strong accusation there. Perhaps it is. Do you think that our City leaders will take legal action against me for saying that I think denying access to City Park to hear ideas of candidates was a way of controlling an election? Would it be because they think that controlling what subjects were talked about in City Park in 2011 was perfectly acceptable, or to try to keep me from talking about the First Amendment through the 2015 election? Do you think that if I want to have a campaign event in City Park next year that I will need to hire an attorney to be able to get my First Amendment rights? I wonder if the conversations that have occurred on the matter has made them decide to read our Constitution and make better efforts to create more open dialogue for next year's election. If our current leaders feel that what they have been doing has been good for our community then they should be proud to talk about it and not shy away from answering questions. Just my insignificant opinions though.

I don't think there is any tour groups operating at this point, but maybe we should start one. It could be called Dilapidated and Deplorable; we could start at 220 E. Main St. to tour the former military surplus store. I doubt there would be a problem going in there, it's not marked "no trespassing" and with knowingly leaving the building wide open, I don't see how they could claim there is an expectation for people to know that the City does not want them inside the building. They would probably have a hard time getting a trespass conviction, it's not like you'd have to break anything to enter. When they start buying more properties, we will probably even be able to expand the tour. You keep saying this building is "wide open" as if someone could just walk right in. I drove by there today and see a fence. They would have to scale that fence to get in, wouldn't they? Isnt a fence a perfectly acceptable way to separate people from danger? For instance, a swimming pool. Don't insurance companies and zoning laws require a fence around a pool? Why is a fence not acceptable in the property you keep referring to?

It makes me think that it must just be a distraction from some real issue that you don't want me to talk about. I wonder what the biggest expense of being self-insured could be, could it be legal expenses to defend against claims? If it were claims, would that mean that we didn't have a good enough attorney? the City's attorney is a first-rate lawyer, easily one of the best in the county. Is that a fellow club member that you are tooting the horn of? I wouldn't be surprised if he's made a considerable amount as a result of tax-payers being responsible for our City's liabilities. It would be interesting to see what the costs were, to see if the self-insurance decision was a gift to a fellow club member. I'll send an e-mail to Derek to see if he would find out about the expenses of their tax payer funded self-insurance experiment.

I met a couple of men today visiting here from Boston. They looked around the store for a while and then asked for directions to the library. I asked how they liked it here. They said we had a fine little town. We then talked about the library some more after I mentioned that it was donated by Carnegie. They didn't seem too frightened.

Didn't they ask you how our city managed to exist without an "AQUAPONICS FACILITY"? g

I like to walk, and when I am in Streator I walk all over town. I never felt any fear in walking around town. In fact, the neighborhoods don't look much different than they did when I was growing up.

Job, I agree our City Attorney is one of the best in the County! g Do you think he advised our Mayor on the First Amendment and the legal consequences or lack of for stifling free speech to try to control an election? Maybe he told the Mayor that he could probably stop a campaign event because he didn't like the subject being discussed and that if I really wanted my free speech that I could spend a few hundred dollars on an attorney to get it and then they could just reverse their decision and allow it with no harm/no foul on their part. However, do you think that he was a good enough attorney to warn the Mayor of the consequences of me using my First Amendment rights to continually talk about our Constitution being violated and the abuse of power being corrupt? He was probably a good enough attorney to tell the Mayor that he could just pick any requirement that would stop a business that he didn't want here and then he didn't legally owe me or the public any justification. However, was he a good enough attorney to tell the Mayor what the political consequences could be for keeping business out with a requirement that he couldn't find a way to show was not against our laws? I don't know too much about him, but I'm not so sure he is all that good of an attorney. How much have Streator tax payers paid him over the last few years?

Obviously he must be good enough, no one has taken him to task by suing the city for these alleged grievous, illegal acts. I am surprised that you have to ask how much he was paid and didn't already have the information.
