I think we pretty well decimated their argument for anyone with a rational brain, and there is nothing you can do to convince those who are irrational.
Sometimes you have to remind yourself about teaching a pig to speak.

We had a thread recently that touched on people living outside the city limits using city streets but not paying city property taxes. That may be true but we pay taxes where we live and that maintains the roads where WE live. Same with Fire protection, police protection, etc. If we want to use the Library or golf at Anderson, we pay a little extra to reflect that we don't support it with tax dollars like residents do. Should 'THOSE people' have to pay US somehow for driving to VACTOR or Twin Creeks or wherever else they may want to go? Seems pretty ridiculous, doesn't it? Don't we pay taxes when we buy gas 'in town'? Don't we pay sales tax in support of 'the City' when we 'shop Streator'? Should people outside of Reading Township pay extra if the fire department cones to a wreck South of 12th Street? We may be outside the city limits and it may be a different county and different school district, but we are pretty much one community. Let's not have crazy thoughts that we are using up and wearing out City Streets or something. They aren't plowing extra snow or using extra salt because we are using the streets too. Love the last sentence! Lol!

Maybe we should take Mr. Wrighton's foolish words to heart and stay out of Streator as much as possible since they don't like us "stealing" what apparently only city residents are entitled to. I think Ottawa, Pontiac, LaSalle, Peru, etc. will have no problem with us driving on their roads to spend our money...

Don't let ignorance stop you. The purpose of roads are to get you one place to another. Hence, you are going to another place that your tax dollars don't cover (unless you purchase something). With a highway going right through this town, it boggles me that someone would even come up with that.

Been reading a long time and never really commented, but thought I'd give it a whirl. My brother works for IDOT. The way he explained motor fuel tax was that the state distributes to cities was based on population. Even if you are buying gas in Streator, the mft portion may not go to Streator. It is collected and then the state sends it out. If 14000 live in Streator city limits and 6000 live outside, the city gets credit for 14000.

The point is everyone is paying somewhere. People travel all over. You can't stop someone from using the roads because they don't live there. It's absurd!

I agree that it seems very short sighted of our City to be worrying about others using our roads without paying taxes specifically for that road. Will they be doing away with their tourism commission now, since they would be people using our roads without paying property tax?
Instead of trying to make the people who they want to join our City out to be illegal sewage dumpers who can't be trusted to be under the County's jurisdiction and users taking our services without us getting anything in return, maybe they should be trying to improve the quality of life inside City limits so that people stop wanting to be outside and promoting to those outside the positive benefits they can offer for joining.

Are people really that forgetful? This has been talked about and been an issue for as long as I remember. It used to be discussed by Ted and Craft (can't remember her first name right now) on WIZZ. Before SU, SOL and Facebook. Every so many years, the topic of annexing south Streator, and the other surrounding areas.

Everyone understands that the city wants the population to grow. Yes, more people does equal more money whether it is property tax revenue or motor fuel tax revenue. It is how they are going about it that is the problem. Kyle hit the nail on the head. Make people want to join not make people want to leave. Its this type of backward thinking that has hurt Streator for years. You can't keep doing the same things and expect different results.

Over 75 years ago Orson Wells talked on the radio about aliens attacking our planet. Do you think aliens are going to attack our planet or that it will be acceptable if they do, because it was talked about on the radio? It seems that some of our City leaders think that if the talk about things like forced annexation and home rule that others might think it is acceptable when it pushed on those who say they don't want it. I think that for our government to be for the people and by the people, they really need to start listening to the people, don't you?

By the way, Orson Wells did that as a hoax, and many people committed suicide over it... just saying.

By the way, Orson Wells did that as a hoax, and many people committed suicide over it... just saying. Is that right? Do you have some type of reputable source to confirm any of your claimed "many" suicides? From the History Channel website: There were rumors that the show caused suicides, but none were ever confirmedDo you think the government put him up to it as a form of population control? Maybe you shouldn't believe everything that you pick up from whatever conspiracy theory source you use... just saying.
