Great, Are they in Cities the size of Streator? Excellent. Let's tear down ours down and build that Morton Building to replace the old City Hall at the corner of Bridge and Bloomington. What would be the expenses to the City to relocate their Services to another facility, install new computers, telephones, a jail in that Morton Building, and the cost of moving the existing desks, chairs, etc. Oh, I would hope there would be there would be no interruption as citizens call to complain about Snow Removal services in their alley so they can get out of their garage to buy groceries. Yep, that Morton Building idea sound like a winner. You, and Bigdipper, and Sniper can do the math and present to the city taxpayer how much we can save, with your suggestion. Of course you can't. Give it a try though, just for grins. g .

A town our size that is a suburb of Chicago, shouldn't have a Morton style building. looking, but having a Taj-mahal in the same size town in a rural area might give the impression of out of control spending. I don't advocate tearing down our current building and putting in something new, but the current building needs required maintainance and upgrades for functionality, along with ADA required improvements.

The new fire station was too fancy, with the clock and all. Maybe the city should charge them over night lodging & a pillow tax.

that could be said for the 1.3 million dollars spent at Anderson fields.

Greek using City-Data.com Streator supposedly has NOT had any Burglaries or DUI's or OTHER major Felonies in the last 5 YEARS. Could it be the POLICE are NOT REPORTING CRIMES IN THIS CITY.

I didn't see where they were demolishing any of it. Did I miss that or misread? Moving the PD downstairs and public works/engineer give them more room. Water lines are bad as is heat. When this was built there wasn't a lot of access to some of the lines.

Can't spend the dollars you don't have to remodel. So like anybody else, you fix what you can and make do with the rest.

Those businesses don't want to come to a community that is "getting by" with window air conditioners and shoddy repairs. Some people like to do things half a$$ and just get by. I work hard and enjoy nice things. I want city hall and this city to think the same way. Make the repairs and do it right.

bigdipper. I'm sure Morton Building are quite the rage in rural Livingston Co. where you live, and in Ransom where Sniper lives. Perhaps you can due some research and find how many Morton Buildings have been built to serve as a City Hall's in cities of Streator's population. Sometimes you have to invest in a City in the form of taxes to build the infrastructure, to improve services, and into the Schools, to attract investors who consider graduation rates more important than the W/L record of the local sports teams. Investors who consider a "skilled" workforce more important than the number of unemployed individuals available. We may have to invest in making our community more attractive to those who would consider their future management's family relocating to, a community to which they may enjoy and feel welcome. We do not need a cheaper place to live. We need growth in a population of investors and that realize they can grow with us, because we have invested in our City. g . You say that like it is shameful to have grown up rural. I grew up in the country and proud of it. We were taught that we could afford pretty much everything we NEED. We could afford some of the things we WANT. But we couldn't afford anything TWICE. Don't waste money. Take care of what you have. That's some Country sensibilities. I think in a small town like Streator we would have some folks agree. I am just having troubles with the idea of a 40 year old building being SCRAPPED and a replacement costing so much. Fiscal responsibility. It's not country sense to save a dollar. It's common sense. I come from a city where they would demolish buildings left and right. BUT it was businesses. Their dollar. Glitz, glamour, tourism, and big business. Funny thing is, the SPD building reminds me of the sheriff's department building there. Now if that was GOOD enough for such a large city, don't you think it is good enough for a town this size? Make the repairs.

They are not tearing it down. They are making renovations. The demolition that they talk about I am guessing is getting rid of the hill by the Sally port and redoing the foundation there.

I wasn't here 40 years ago, but from what I have read about City Hall over the years, says to me, MAYBE it was built on the cheap. They have had a lot of problems w/ it for a long time. Structural and mechanical.
