The proposed budget was $3 billion dollars in the red. How do you propose getting around the deficit? Maybe you would pledge some of your monthly income to help subsidize the programs that you call very important?Everybody has their hand out these days and this governor is putting his foot down. We can only hope he stands his ground. Nobody will be affected too much if the needed revenue comes from a relatively tiny amount of tax being put on goods and services currently untaxed.
These people aren't worth it, huh?...critical to our disadvantaged, our poor, our disabled, including programs benefiting our children and elderly...I think they're worth it, but I don't know if our lawmakers do! It's the lawmakers job to have a balanced budget so they will need to decide what stays and what goes. There is only one state that has more taxing bodies than Illinois and that is California. How do all the other states get by and operate while taking less taxes than Illinois and California? How can we propose a $3 billion dollar budget deficit with all those tax dollars rolling in? That said, I give more in taxes each year than any other guy in any other state than California. I do not want to give any more. I shouldn't be asked to. There is enough money to run Illinois. The lawmakers that we elect need to decide what stays and what goes. Cuts need to be made. I don't know what they will be because those cuts are not my decision. All I know is I give more than I should for this state to be run. The lawmakers take my money so they decide. But, how dare you ask me to feel pity if I say I don't think the children, disabled, etc. are worth an extra tax. That's unfair. It's especially unfair for those already getting their income from the state to ask me to give more. You should feel shame for asking more of me!

Sorry for you that you feel the way you do about these citizens. You sound like you are at least half-rational. Do you have any idea at all what 3 billion dollars in cuts to programs and services would REALLY look like? I don't think you do and moreover, I don't think you care at this point in the discussion. Hey, everyone has the right to their opinion.

Butters, we don't because they won't TRY.
When they first started squeezing us, we hollered and screamed, we can't do it.
Guess what, we not only did it, but we have gone further than anyone thought possible.
The difference is we either did it or lost our jobs, the state simply sticks its hands further into citizens pockets.
ENOUGH.

A total collapse or near collapse is more acceptable to you than taxing some goods and services that are currently untaxed - in order to stave off a a disastrous shutdown of programs, services, schools, and various infrastructure projects desperately needed...along with massive layoffs of all kinds of critical people through extreme cuts? There's no bailout coming. We come up with the money or suffer the consequences. That's the truth, Ruth.

Butters, forget it.
You obviously cannot comprehend that people can do more with less.
Enjoy this sh!thole state, because more and more successful people are leaving, placing more of a burden upon the rest.

I'd like to think it was that easy BB.It seems that more money to the government leads to more spending and forgetting about paying down our debts.. Notice all the gambling machines everywhere now.Thats a crapload of tax money coming in and do we have any idea where it is going..

And I wonder what percentage of those using those machines are receiving any public assistance? Because, it's their mantra that everyone deserves a "treat", or relaxation, etc.

The Illinois Policy Institute has MANY ideas for fixing the problems...involving NO tax increases and cutting programs. The biggest problem in this state is our politicians. Nobody will agree on ANYTHING. At this point in time we need a governor able to grasp the reigns of power ala/Lincoln in the Civil War years just long enough to get things on the right track A benevolent dictator, if you please. The Dems have a stranglehold on this state and won't budge an inch. We're goin' DOWN.

And just exactly what is Rauner doing?
Shut the d**n State down, start hiring replacement workers, and even the dumbest of the dumb will suddenly see Jesus.
Amazing what you can do if you know your livelihood is really at risk.

Enjoy this sh!thole state, because more and more successful people are leaving, placing more of a burden upon the rest. In 1972 I left. I was pounding nails for a living and I could do more w/less in Texas. It was not a hard decision. My brother left in 1963 and my sister in 1967. There just were no decent jobs in town and the future of our local economy looked pretty bleak. There was not enough carpentry work. No new houses were going up at all. Heck I was driving back & forth to Kankakee to work.

AM 1250 WSPL 2 hrs · Unions representing Illinois state employees have filed a lawsuit demanding they will be paid in full and on time despite the lack of a 2016 fiscal year budget. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 and the Service Employees International Union filed the lawsuit Thursday. The unions argue the state's failure to pay employees would violate their contracts.
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is asking a judge for a ruling on what bills the state can pay during the budget stalemate without first getting approval from lawmakers and the governor. This is day two of the fiscal year and there is no sign of a break in the impasse. Madigan wants a ruling on how much state workers may be paid if things drag on into late July.

Union 31 represents prison guards and such, how are you going to lay them off or do we just let the monkeys run the zoo, and I am sure these people didn't get the job because they were bored, they have bill and families to support, why should they suffer because the state can't get their chit together!
