The railway that goes through Dwight is capable of handling 100 MPH trains. They are still working to get a 100 MPH train from Chicago to St Louis. Stops at Bloomington and Springfield may make it $$$ feasible. I think that the "NE Corridor" from D.C. to NYC makes sense and $$. It is being extended to Boston now. Some politicos want to spin it off and sell it to a private Co. And, the money lost, over these next few days. Folks, trying to get to work and such. This is even bigger, than just this accident. I, had no idea, Amtrak was used, that much out east. I, just love the train.

MM, my best trip, was from Chicago to DC. Had a wonderful time. Love those Red Caps, Thanx dd. Even my coach trips,to southern Illinois, were the bomb. I, looked forward,to each one.

I used to take the Santa Fe to Chicago from Streator. The only stop before the Loop was Joliet. The trip took 1 hour and 35 minutes. The train/trolley from Michigan City is around 50 miles and takes up to two hours.
I have been riding trains all of my life. The only ones I liked were the narrow gauge railroads out west, and the trains all over Europe. I always have wanted to ride the Orient Express, the setting of numerous spy novels. Although the ride is much shorter than it used to be, it is extremely expensive.

Perhaps this high speed rail is not a good idea....... The high speed rail from china I believe goes around 200 mph or better, imagine that? I would hate too see the collateral damage from that.

That's one of the things I don't really get. 'High Speed Rail' here in the USA evidently just means about 100 MPH. Japan and France have had Bullet Trains that do over twice that fast for a few decades now. We had Trains doing over 80 MPH here probably 80 years ago. So why are we spending so much for only 100 MPH trains now? In Europe and Asia high speed refers to the speed of the train, in the USA high speed refers to how fast they blow through the money paying for it. I am frankly surprised you don't know why we are spending the sums though.......... There's money to be spent, and Corporations to support!

Roman, the best train in North America is VIA Rail's "The Canadain" It runs from Toronto to Vancouver. 1950's first class passenger train in perfect condition. Best scenery, best accomodations, best gormet food & best service. In the Summer they run over 30 cars. We have taken it 3 times. Would do it again in a heart beat & $$$. Spectacular winter scenes.

I can see that. The scenery is great, especially the Canadian Rockies. I love the rear bullet back lounge car w/ an observation bubble on top. They serve comp. champaign & hor devours. I like sitting up there alone at night, watching the train go through the forests. I feel like I am riding on my own HO scale train. LOL

Another pipeline burst in SB, Cali. I hope they fine the Texas Co. for it! ... They found another oil slick, about 2 miles out. Gosh, and to think they are going to drill in the Arctic. scary!
