Could it have been a railroad bridge across the Vermillion 5 miles up? We had the G.M & O as well as the Wabash go through that area. One went to Dwight via Blackstone and the other went to Pontiac via Cornell.

How many of you remember the OLD Manville Bridge? That deck was under a lot of water many times and never washed out. I think one time it may have shifted some. I have no idea how that old bridge lasted so long. Some of the local daredevils would jump from it into the Vermillion. Some of the local crazies would climb up and jump from the TOP. I knew a guy who jumped from the top of it! The older kids would go there to swim, and us younger ones would go south of Manville, via the RR Trks. & swim in a little muddy creek near the Apple farm.Yep, mom would know too, when we came home w/muddy play clothes!

I google Map=ed it. Not the RR from Blackstone at all. The other line crossed the river at Cornell. I can still see most of the ROW going to Streator. That would be my "GUESS". (It probably was just an old country road after all.)

My Dad loved to take "short-cuts" I can't count the number of times we ended up in some farmer's front yard. LOL

My Dad loved to take "short-cuts" I can't count the number of times we ended up in some farmer's front yard. LOL That reminds me of being on a vacation when i was little. We had passed a billboard advertising some adventure or another. As we got closure, we could see it in the distance. The map was taking us all the way around. My dad decided to take that short cut that your dad liked As we left the highway for blacktop for gravel, for two strips with grass growing down the center, we could see it just...across the creek. Lol. Dad edged up slowly in our old Ford, told my mom "ahh, we can make it". So, down the bank, through the creek, and up the oposite bank we went. When we got to the other side, my dad laughed and said it was a tad deeper than he judged, as water was pouring out. I believe there was a joke or two about having fish for dinner. Lol, you know...i dont remember what off road destination we saw, but i will remember the getting there till i die. And those are the type of trips we aalways took. The destination, no matter how great, it was the getting there that was a big part of the vacation. Great great memories!

(It probably was just an old country road after all.) Curiosity got the best of me too. I looked at Google maps and saw the old road that had the abandoned Bridge. It is above where Long Point Creek flows in and above Mud Creek (the one I think BlueStar referenced down by Apples old place) too. If you look at the map there is a road called E. 2700 N. Rd. It looks like it used to go right over the river and in fact, pretty sure it did. That Bridge would have served a pretty rural area. I suppose it was the fastest way between Long Point and Manville. It's not surprising that it was not replaced. With high costs, should we look into more of that? Are some of our rural roads and bridges too costly to keep up? Immediately East of Blackstone is a N/South road that is essentially abandoned. It's still THERE, it's not farmed over, but it is NEVER used. I went down it a few years ago and it is SUPER bumpy. I mean it's not even smooth dirt, it's GRASS. Repair it? www.facebook.com/BigBuckRegistry/photos/a.497969360234806.114855.497624440269298/736854439679629/?type=1

Hot fudge milkshake? ? Yup, we make those. Pretty good too, messes us up on consistency a little. They may not be quite as thick as most because of the hot fudge. It also tends to stick to the malt cup when we mix it. But they are awful good. If you make them with Chocolate Ice Cream, it's too rich....Imho. The Vanilla as a base and the hot fudge for the syrup tastes better balanced to me. Everyone has different taste though. We can make them how you like it. The combinations of Vanilla, Chocolate(or even Twist) along with the addition of Malt and all the various flavors make for a LOT of Combinations. Some guy asked for a new one on me the other day. He asked for a Vanilla Shake with Marshmallow......maybe not bad....new one on me..... Hotfudge sunday w/ marshmallow, is the bomb.
