Anyone had good luck with local businesses that replace boilers? Good prices or service?
Thanks in advance.

Nothing against anyone locally here...but my dad who had always done his own plumbing had one here come when he was having problems with his boiler. They kept leaving to go back to the shop for certain parts, or so they claimed. Finally my dad went down the basement to check on what the hold up and problem was. He walked into the boiler room to find the guy standing there scratching his head. Dad took one look at his work and said, "well, there's your problem dumba$$..you put that part on BACKWARDS". For their mistake they still did end up charging him all of this labor, and supposedly coming back and forth from the shop on the clock. Call Grassers (sp) for an estimate. They do great work, at really good prices....and they DO know what they are doing. For another instance: one of our good friends just had a new water heater installed by the same backwards people. He had already purchased this water heater, and they ended up charging him over $600.00 in labor!!! THAT'S ^^^ ridiculous!!! Just my two cents...good luck btw.............. M

Our water heater was put in a year ago in November. Grassers were the ones that installed the water heater. And since I did not own the house that we are in at the time, I did not have to pay for the water heater, so I honestly do not know the cost. But I do see Grassers around Streator, often. So Maybe they are doing something right. I see more out of towner(not Streator's business) around Streator, as far as it comes to furnace and water heater work. And if you are low income people, that are on strict budget, I would think about calling T.C.O.C. and see if they would help out.

Too many variables in types of boilers to just put a name out there.
I had a 1923 Boiler that I took care of myself until I got stupid and got rid of it.
I know Metcalf-Martin works on commercial boilers in some of the schools.
One thing is for sure, you don't want to guess with a large pressurized vessel in your basement.

My advise is keep it simple. If you have cast iron radiators, go with a cast iron boiler. The high end stuff tends to cost more to keep running than having a simple boiler that uses slightly more fuel.
I replaced a 1934 American boiler that worked just fine when it was replaced. Old boilers held a lot of water and had a big cushion / mass to prevent thermoshock. New boilers only hold a gallon or two of water so there's very little cushion to prevent cold water from returning and cracking the heat exchanger.
So water needs to be carefully blended on your new unit, or else !

DO NOT HIRE GRASSERS! 95% of their guys are high school kids that they pay $10 an hour and have no idea what they are doing. There is definitely a reason they are so cheap. You definitely will get exactly what you payed for, and they will never I repeat never come back and fix their screw ups. You will end up hiring another company to come back and fix what they have done.

You definitely will get exactly what you payed for, and they will never I repeat never come back and fix their screw ups. You will end up hiring another company to come back and fix what they have done. We had some furnace duct replaced, this past December. That actually Grassers were suppose to have done when we did not own the house or live in the house at the time. We also had found out that the water heater had a very slight gas leak. But it ended up since now that I own the house that I live in, Town and Country ended up fixing(repairing or finishing up) work that Grassers should of done to begin with. Also Grassers did put in the furnace/central air unit in this house, prior to me moving in the house( prior to owner ship), and they were suppose to have done a summer start up to make sure that it was working. Until I threatened them because they were paid a head of time. Granted, I was not the one that paid for Grassers services, but I was the one that had to pay another company to finish up work that Grassers was paid to have done. So you are correct. Or at lease our situation with Grassers, was what you had posted.

First time I ever heard of folks not liking Grassers. I was going to call them if I had a HVAC problem. Now I'm not so sure.

Whatever you do don't ever call Metcalf-Martin. They will rip you off big time. It's what they do. Ask around and I'm sure you'll hear all kinds of stories.

M That's about $400 over what it should be wow! I hook mine up within an hour, and If someone else does it for you, then you could also add $70.00 too $100.00extra for coming there, total should be around $200 to $250.00. sad that you're friends were ripped off MnM.

That does not include the water heater, if so add $300.00 extra for a bottom line water heater.
