My great grandmother's brother lived at some retirement/long care place along old route 66 between Chenoa and Pontiac. He and his sister were born n the East coast city and sent here via 'The Orphen Train". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orphan_Train

My heart broke when I read to La Salle Co. ... .... ... ... To this day, my Mother uses the phrase; " It's going to send us to the poorhouse. NOT ONCE have I known there literally was an actual place she's referring to... W O W, Talk about feeling humbled ! I didn't read through the history of resolutions to such places, I had to take a break after reading the conditions of the La Salle Co. facility. Horses received better care than what these lost souls received. I can't imagine being a child born or confined to these conditions. WHY and HOW could this EVER be considered "The Correct" thing to do, even back 100 + years ago, WHY? SO...... Does anyone forsee humanity ever returning to these conditions WITHOUT MAJOR CHANGE? ... ... ... ... ... ...

I have passed by a sign for it in Livingston County many times but did not pay it much attention. I knew the Nursing home used to be considered the place where they would take care of those that could not afford other care. Again, I never paid much attention and never knew much about it. I saw an old plat book and it said right on it some of the acreage that belonged to the 'poor farm'. I thought to myself, well, maybe it's where the homeless people lived and they worked the land to provide for their own needs.....oh boy....wrong.... The poorhouse was established for indigent/poor and homeless, but it was far from some kind of commune. I read some reports that were filed way back in the day and it sounds like they were 'inmates' and a good many of them had mental problems as well. It seems if people could not provide for themselves back then, they didn't want them wandering around left to their own devices. They provided for their needs, but they were basically locked up. Link to a brief description/report: genealogytrails.com/ill/poorhouses.htmlbigdipper, Yes, I passed it many times from the 1950-1970, if that was the one located on the old Rt.66, or perhaps that was the one located in McLean County. No matter the county, you are correct that is when Our Country had compassion for the, indigent, the poor, and those with "mental problems". Do a bit of research, and find out how many "mental" care facilities were closed though out or State of Illinois during the Presidency of Ronald Reagan. Then do a followup and find out what happened to those residents the closed facilities? Let us know the results. g

Many states once had debtors' prisons, right out of D i c kens. Illinois, in contrast, forbade debtors' prison in the original state constitution.

Stating some were "Insane" some "Idiots"
I can't wrap my head around the terminology.
From what Websters Dictionary reads; the definition of "idiot" was the same as " mentalretardation"
W O W !

Honestly, we have taken the politically correct thing to a level that does not even mean sense, it is to the point you don't even know what you allowed today anymore!

I could care less about many of the PC sayings etc. It has helped w/not calling some "Retards" n such, but many are carried too far. If you don't like it, toughen up, pull-up your big girl/boy panties! Nuff said! There is no reason to feel the need to "Fit-In," be your self!

Link to a brief description/report: genealogytrails.com/ill/poorhouses.htmlYes, they were considered vagrants, or bums...or those with mental disabilities which at the time they didn't know much about then either. Can you only imagine what would happen with today's society of people that we have that are unemployed, or perhaps qualify as being 'disturbed'..how many THEN would be taken off the streets when they couldn't prove any ownership of residency, or any of the above...whhooaaa!!! How about the horrible stories of people being pent up in what they referred to as "shuttered rooms". Families would birth a mongoloid child, or one with a deformity, and literally put them locked up in hiding from society in these rooms in their houses...in fear of embarrassment to their family names. I had never heard of such a thing happening ever before until I saw the 1967 movie "The Shuttered Room". I questioned such a thing with my parents in which they did confirm that 'back in the day' families with such children had done that, and it was indeed quite true. That movie has always freaked me out, not just because of the subject matter at hand, but the fact in. M
