Maybe they could pull their pants up over their crack and not make a fashion statement.

fof2 Do you know how many children in the school district that do NOT have a winter coat OR a jacket?
Do you have any idea how many children in Jr. High are in need of having a parent home? This IS Northlawn we are referring to; correct me if I'm incorrect, PLEASE? Most children in Jr. High are self efficient, I would believe. Though a "stay at home Mom;" my children were responsible prior to grade 6 to; enter our home IF by chance I was not home, use the phone if needed in case of an emergency, call an Emergency contact, (this was prior to 911), knew their address and phone number, knew how to reach their father or their emergency contact if EVER needed and neither of us were available. They knew after having their after school snack, it was time to do all homework prior to dinner, then and Only then the television and telephone was at their access and time was shared amonst 4.
We were blessed to be able to provide proper clothing for our children, this was not THE issue in Streator that many years ago as IS now. I KNOW first hand the numbers of children who relied on "Blessings in a Backpack" at OP AND as far as I know this situation has not gained a lot of progress. There continues to be high numbers of children showing up in T shirts AND NO COATS, to this day AND not all due to Fashion Issues.
I'm not going to ask IF your "2 children" fall under these circumstances, this is your private information. I will assume; not, because of your reply believing it's alright for a child to "need a coat" for maybe 1 day is NOT a problem.
An FYI for those who are unaware, it is against rules for our Teachers to thoughtfully provide a used coat, jacket, fitting pair of shoes for a student in need. I know of; *NOT 1* Streator Teacher who is Unwilling to give of themselves. THAT'S THE PROBLEM ! The people in higher authority with FULL pockets that made these rules...... Which is NOT mine to judge.
It was due to the numbers of children in need that "Blessings in a Backpack" was originally formed. Streator had/has an astounding number of children going without. In my opinion; 1 child who is cold and hungry, IS 1 too many. Espcially since there IS a solution.
Just like a house; somtimes you have to improvise. Turn on the oven, space heaters, move around more, put on more clothing, a kerosene heater.... In a multilevel building with 100+ students / staff INSIDE...... ( ? ).
Okay, it's a temperary situation with a bandaid on it that Could cost $$$$ to repair Correctly. No money, no emergency funds for repairs, no one wants to have their taxes raised for THE * FUTURE * OF * STREATOR * / * AMERICAN. I'd call this A Disgrace AND with ease bring a separate topic INTO this thread..... Reasons Streator does not have Physicians OR Interest for New replacements for retiring Physicians, more people interested to move to our community. Attitude comes to my mind.
When, Where How, Who is going to come up with SOLUTIONS for what counts MOST to bring Society to a set acceptable Standard for the future of where all of us call home?
A * LOT * OF * EXCUSES * AT * THE * EXPENSE * OF; * ( ? )

I'm sorry, I thought I read a child had to wear a coat it was so cold. Maybe I should reread the post. I know we had a very early onset of winter a few weeks ago, I was out in it. If a child wears a coat to school, I would believe it to be cold. I think if the heat is on and functioning in a School building AND the heat is being paid for by we the tax payers, there should be no reason kids would need to be home alone. I also should check to see if I missed something said about a student seeing their breath, I must have missed that as well. Wearing a coat while in class would be rather cumbersom and being cold in class distracting for students and Teachers.I guess this is In my opinion. I admit I' m not perfect and I do make errors. Perhaps those are the same children who are still wearing shorts and short sleeved shirts? It's winter..they need to dress for cold days. Perhaps these are the children without coats or sacrifice their coat for a younger sibling or family member. Perhaps this was a day that this child had outgrown a coat they'd worn in the past and now does not have a coat to wear ( ? )

No I don't know how many. The schools do give coats to those in need of one if there are coats to give.
The heat was out for a couple hours, it did not get real cold in the building. The temp did drop but not to a low level.
Northlawn is 5th-8th grade. I wouldn't want to send those kids home to an empty home. What if something were to happen to a child? I don't want that coming back on me with people then asking why kids were sent home without notice. Also doesn't the state have a law about children under a certain age being left alone? These are 9-13 year olds. This was a one time thing. All of the schools are heated. If this were something that couldn't have been repaired quickly I'm sure they would have looked at an early dismissal and notified parents through the phone system to make arrangements.

fof2,
I based my posts on The very " F I R S T " Post of this Thread. Far be it for me to call someone a "fabricator" OR to accuse a person of NOT telling the truth.
NO, I do not Believe Everything I read on this Forum, nor do I Disbelieve every post I read.
I happen to know firsthand SOME things that go on within the Streator School system and I will be the first to stand up and say; there is a lot of dirt swept under the rug, so to speak. THIS seems to be the way of the world for which we live now. To say different would be as untruthful as "the dirt I speak of."
AS for " 9 - 13 year olds " home alone for a few hours at the Most; each student must have an emergency contact. If not, for every student with a fever, vomitting, showing signs of being ill, the office would be overflowing with each outbreak of colds and flu. Why you would feel responsible for a healthy 13 yr. old home alone, I find to be perplexing. Correct me if I'm wrong, Please? Doesn't St. Mary's now or at one time offer a Babysitting Course for a minimal fee for pre-teens?
NOW this "Thread" has totally jumped off track which IS ridiculous. I have NO desire to continue defending what was written from the first post. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, I gave mine and thus far my responses are going from wrong to ridicule. Since these are the feelings of each person who has responded, so be it.
I've not been posting for argument sake nor ridicule by those who have found sick humor in my defense of a Thread from a concerned parent. In my opinion; 1 day of wearing a coat due to a malfunction in the heating system of one of Streators schools is not something to go viral about. Once the posts turned into speaking of complete breakdown And thoughts this Possibly could turn into a Very expensive repair / replacement, I became concerned and continue to be so. My main concern is for the youth, secondly; where WILL the funds for a Major repair OR possibly replacement come from?
TAXES / MORE OVERCROWDING of Classrooms / DOWNSIZING More EDUCATORS in This FINANCIALLY BROKE City for Which the MAJORITY of Us Live, and ALL For whom this affects......
MY PRAYERS; For OUR Children and for ALL Whom These Issues Concern + + +

Im not sure if smh still off offers the babysitting class or not. Regardless, illinois law sets 14 as the age a child can legally be left alone.

Illinois law is 14 for a child to be home alone. This is IF you abandon your child without restrictions and under certain circumstances. Did you read through ANY of the Web site or others? www.childlegalaid. Please read through this web site front to back along with many others and it will clarify this misleading post. There is a Law which applies to children through DCF OR children with special needs. If most 14 yr. Olds needed a babysitter after school or on Institute Days, I assure you there would be more Sex Offenders / Predators seeking Employment or parents using sick or unpaid work days. IF I had a 14 yr. old in need of a babysitter after school, I would find it hard to trust; Mrs. Doubtfire (aka Movie with Robin Williams) with my teen. I was a stay at home mom and through neighborhood friends and networks, " IF" we needed someone for our children to call upon in an emergency this IS exactly how the IL STATE Law....... reads ( . )

fof2 Do you know how many children in the school district that do NOT have a winter coat OR a jacket? How did they make it TO the School? We all wish life were perfect, but there is no getting around the fact that at some d**n point in it, you are going to be cold, wet and hungry. Y'all act like they were sent walking home in a -40 freaking Blizzard.

PEOPLE! Yes, the heat was off. Was it tolerable? Yes it was. How do I know? I was there. This is no different than when something in your home breaks and needs a new part and repair. Why would a building full of adults put any child at risk?
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

A streamline had a leak. Heat at Northlawn was off for about half a day while it was patched. It will be repaired over Christmas break. Vote for Lansford. 4 more years. Thank you for checking. I appreciate it.
