A few of us had a discussion last night about the heating system at Northlawn Junior High and the HVAC system at Streator City Hall. Every day my son comes home and tells me the heat is not working in the building at Northlawn. He wears his coat all day long. I've even heard it from employees. Whether it's the whole school or just parts of it, I don't have a clue.
Then I recall City Hall being quoted in The Times, saying that it would cost close to one million dollars to revamp their system. (Where do they get these quotes? Makes me think of the $650 toilet seat the White House bought. Ace sells them for a LOT less.) City Hall was without A/C this past summer and were worried about the system when they changed over to heating in the Fall.
The times our furnace or A/C has gone out in our home, we repaired or replaced them. Seriously, how hard is it to heat a building? Especially a school building?

This is just a guess, but some of the older buildings like the School are likely on a boiler system. Those are a little different ball game. Yes, I think that is what Northlawn has. |

Boilers aren't that much different. New boilers are far smaller and easier to work on as well.
As far as city hall, I can't imagine it being anywhere near 1M. Sounds as if they need to get a couple of new quotes.........
I would have to go back and look, but we heat and air condition around 60K square feet and it wasn't ANYWHERE near that price...... they would have simply closed us down if it were anywhere near that cost.

If I remember correctly, city hall has had problems from when it was 1st built. I don't understand WHY they didn't go after the contractor then!! ....

The heat is working at Northlawn. Just like a house, temps may vary in each room. I have asked many students at the school how things are and they have told me this same thing. I will check though to find out for sure.

About a week and a half to two weeks ago, our youngest daughter came home from school and stated that the boiler was broke down, and the school had no heat, and the school was cold. There has to be some truth to it. Granted, I know it is not cheap to repair boilers/heating systems. I also know that gas and electric bills are not cheap. But also when the heating systems are not kept up to par, than it does also raise yours bills, also. Northlawn better check the heating system, if students and staff are complaining. If the heating system not working properly, and completely stops working, that could also effect the plumming and then will be more costly to repair everything. The kids are off for two weeks, it's the best time to check on the heating system.

Hey, this is just thunder rumbling in the distance. Give it a coupla' years...we've just begun to watch the deterioration of our schools...staff, students, and buildings.

A streamline had a leak. Heat at Northlawn was off for about half a day while it was patched. It will be repaired over Christmas break.
Vote for Lansford. 4 more years.

Butterbean, you are correct. Having no money means less there is for repairs. Some things will be fixed right, some will not. This is kind of the situation the high school was in back in the early 90's and when Dr Mattingly was there, when money is tight you put stuff off and hope it doesn't bite you in the butt in the future.

(though it's been warmer AND this spreads germs faster, SOME kids. Do Not have a choice other than. to TOUGH it out when SICK.....)

So angel, in the middle of the day we should send all the kids home? It didn't get terribly cold. They couldn't see their breath. If they had to put on a jacket for a little bit it's better than sending them home where there may not be a parent.

I know we had a very early onset of winter a few weeks ago, I was out in it. If a child wears a coat to school, I would believe it to be cold.
I think if the heat is on and functioning in a School building AND the heat is being paid for by we the tax payers, there should be no reason kids would need to be home alone.
I also should check to see if I missed something said about a student seeing their breath, I must have missed that as well.
Wearing a coat while in class would be rather cumbersom and being cold in class distracting for students and Teachers.I guess this is In my opinion.
I admit I' m not perfect and I do make errors.
