It WAS and could be again.... A CIVIC CENTER. But it would require a lot of venues to make it work. Concerts, trade shows, sports, roller rink.... whatever. If it is not used, it will cost the owner a lot in taxes (If not government owned.) and utilities as well as plain upkeep. The reason it is such good shape has been the Federal Government paying for it. Same reason it is closing. If the Streator Community Center didnt exist, it would have been a good place to house them. Plenty of room for activities, such as dances, maybe an "urban" league basketball league for underpriviledged, side offices for counseling, etc. To make it viable, it would have to be used quite often, not just a few days a month. I have a hunch that it might not go for a lot of money. If I could afford it, I would like to have it for the basketball court and the range they have in the basement. Somebody will come scarf it up though, it was supposed to close years ago and then some other agency took it over. Maybe Homeland Security or other government agency will buy it.

Does the armory contain asbestos, and other hidden problems? The city would love to buy another money pit. That way the 74 % poverty level of streator's citizens could hang out there.

I highly doubt it since the building went under a huge renovation not that many years ago! If the City did purchase this building or any private individual to utilize this for special events then the Streator Hobby Show could then in fact make a come back. We still do have all of our show equipment in storage, and after that many years do know the whole floor plan and set-up of this equipment in order to put on a show again. We have though through the years lost many members, due to passing, and moving away. So regrouping and acquiring new members would be a task at hand. The Hobby Council could in fact make a resurgence...but that would depend though on the public's input. Guess then I am asking opinions here.............if the community would be willing to again support such an event again? M

BD...awww if we could only multiply you by 30, then there would be a slight possibility. When a bouts was your family affiliated and active with the Council, I should know them them? Ya know I have been procrastinating about liquidating all of our show equipment, perhaps this is why then...hindsight? I know that I would love nothing more then to see this show be able to be put on yet again here in our town...after-all it was an iconic "free" event. Alot of course would depend on the interest of the public in joining to help, but more so will be the outcome of the Armory building, and the owners intentions. M

If it wouldn't ruin the floor yes. Or if there is something they could put over the floor to protect it. It could be used for that on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I can see a lot of beneficial uses for the community. It has a kitchen that could also be a concession stand. Stage for concerts, plays, etc.

The coliseum in bloomington, il. , cannot make a go of it, in a new building. The people down there have well paying jobs and money, something streator has little of. The council should not even consider the armory money pit!

AM 1250 WSPL 31 mins ยท A local representative is stepping in to help Streator gain the recently closed armory. Representative Frank Mautino recently advanced House Bill 4130 this week, which grants the state to transfer ownership of the Streator Armory to the city. The city will be purchasing the building for $1 and officials plan on turning the facility into a business incubator for local entrepreneurs. The armory closed down earlier this year after the Army could no longer maintain the facility following a tight budget season, sending it's 90 staff members to Machesney Park.
