Had I not gone back & read some of my own words, I would possibly have overlooked the simple & important reality found in Toshikos post concerning the JV team. The pattern has been the same for several years, good team work as the JV team, much talent present on the team, yet complete disintegration of the TEAM when they reach the varsity level. A friend saved a blurb from the Ottawa Times for me. In the news blip, concerning the best players in "the area", there were 2 Streator players listed in 2nd place for "this area", of all the schools bigger & smaller there were record setting talents found on our 'losing team'. I've heard many ideas for remedying the problem, but I think the time may truly be here when ending school sports programs could benefit our students as well as the school budget. I rarely find myself in the pen with CityS, but this time, I agree & recall how my husband & I located & paid for the extra curricular activities of our daughter. By the way she has done very well, & does not seem to have suffered from not having participated in municipally funded activities.

I don't know if we need to abandon HS sports, but we do need to observe and correct the reason that the JV team can have talent, and it all fall apart at the varsity level. There is really only 1 thing different, and that is the coaching. You can't just hire a coach, they either have the ability to lead or not...........

A lot of the Issues on the Varsity Level and this goes back DECADES in this town is WHO YOU KNOW in this town. My Older Brother Dominated at the Freshman and Soph levels come Varsity time the kid under his Parents where HUGE BOOSTERS in the Red and White Club guess who was the Starter their Son. Most Kids know the Score in HS and come that Junior Year say SCREW it and quit Playing why should I when the Streator Elites are the only ones that get to play. Look at the Names at are the Starters Year after Year. Harcar is among the Biggest. Yet they could be among the Worst Players on the Team. Certain Families in this Area are treated Different and not one Person can tell me Otherwise. I graduated from SHS. I was there when in the Fall of 91 we had that Football Player get into that Drunk Driving Accident guess what he PLAYED THAT YEAR. The Following Year at Homecoming 2 Players where Drunk off their Asses Because of their Names they PLAYED. I was there on the Sidelines with them.

IE, who decides who plays?
That is but one responsibility of a good coach.

Easy threaten the School with not Donating 10 Grand for New Uniforms for the Football Team or Stop Buying their Season Tickets in the White Section of the Seats at 3X's the Normal Price for Games. Most of them are the Owners of Businesses that Advertise in the Programs and they threaten to pull it from there. All kinds of ways they could and DO threaten. If you think Money does not effect who gets to play in the High School look no further back than 2-3 years ago with that kid that moved over to Morris and took them to 2nd place in the State in Football when his Dad was told he would Ride the BENCH here in TOWN. He had been the Starter for our Soph team IIRC however there was another Family that wanted THEIR SON TO BE THE QB.

IE, I guess then perhaps they should learn to do with old uniforms and equipment like we did back in the day. My uniform was mostly patches, didn't affect how hard I hit on the line.

Are you serious I played football for 12 years... 4th grade through 2years of college all 4 years at S.H.S. I played sophomore as a freshman and varsity as a sophomore and let me tell you with the numbers that go out for football it has nothing to do with a name . Its always the best players that are available to start. I worked my butt off to start as a sophomore and had nothing to do with a name it had to do with I was better than the kid in front of me, same as a junior and a senior and in college. I proved myself and so did all the people I played with. If your older brother was such a badbutthe would have played but obviously he wasn't good enough. .Also the kid from morris had major attitude problems and from what ive heard no one wanted him there anyways.

Oh really you think Who YOUR DADDY is in this does not mean Squat. My Family is a Transplant into this town moved into here in the Late 70's onto the North Side of Town I grew up on Frech Street. When I was supposed to start School SES realigned the Schools and Centennial became the School where those of us that lived on Frech St went to instead of Northlawn which was still all Grades at the time. Parents that lived over by Centennial PROTESTED that Frech St REJECTS where going to come to their School and Ruin it. That is what we where called REJECTS by the Teachers even in Kindergarden. My oldest Brother was hassled all the time by certain Teachers for Living on Frech St I was Hassled by Teachers for where I lived and my name. Yet kids with names like Harcar Giard Garbowski and others got by with Murder in school. Me if I so much as farted in class I was sitting in Dewells office looking at a Suspension in JR High. In High School things got better but then when your a 3 time all NCIC on the Academic Team they start to pay attention to you. Even when I was doing that I still had to deal with Teachers that treated me like Crap teachers like Vandermark Timmerman Wilson Malsey and a few Others. Why because I refused to toe their line aka Kiss theirasslike the ground was perfect under their feet. Hell I flat out told Mr Timmerman to Kiss MYassafter I graduated in front of Mrs MacGrath. I hated my time as SHS and now I know my Kids are going to have to deal with it being their going to have to go there.

I buy reason tickets and don't pay 3times the price. It's actually a slight discount. Since you named names, what's yours so we can look back to see if you're right about getting the shaft. When I was in school the best players played period. There was no favoritism. It's just an excuse for those who aren't good enough.

Amen F.O.T that's exactly what happens and just like whats wrong with America today I grew up on the wrong side of town so everyone is against me attitude.Well there are plenty of kids that "grew up on the wrong side of town" that were very successful in Streator high school sports.
