I would like to include Elvis's version of "Mystery Train," but nobody seems to be able to nail down its roots. If anyone has an interest in the roots of Rock and Roll, the second best book on the subject was Griel Marcus's "Mystery Train: Images of America in Rock 'n' Roll Music (1975, fifth revision March 25, 2008)" The best book on the subject, only not really devoted to Rock and Roll, was Bob Dylan's "Chronicles, Volume One." Dylan's book is clearly the best book ever written about music in the 60s.

Of course, there was Ricky Nelson's "Garden Party," his lament over his poor reception at Madison Garden. "They" wanted old songs, and Ricky sang his new songs.

Of course, there was Ricky Nelson's "Garden Party," his lament over his poor reception at Madison Garden. "They" wanted old songs, and Ricky sang his new songs. LOL...yes, I remember that, he didn't get any good reviews there, then he wrote Garden Party. Here is a good one that we all probably can surely relate to, ha! I first heard this song when I had to pick up a good friend in Dwight after she rode the shuttle coming back here from Florida. We stopped at The Rendezvous Bar there, which we found out quite quickly it was a biker bar. We sat up at the bar, by ourselves, but kept having guys come up to us to try to converse, and buy us drinks. At one point a guy told my friend, "boy she isn't very friendly, or talkative"...I looked at him and said, "yeah I am, I'm talking to her, aren't I?" Someone played this song on the jukebox, which my friend and I both thought was quite hilarious....and so worth remembering. Needless to say..........after they played that, then we had to find out who sang it. We became a big hit in the bar shortly after, and when we left they all came outside to salute us with their cue-sticks..........."you all come back again and see us soon!" they yelled. Their biker babes did NOT appreciate the two of us being in there and infringing on "their" bar, or men, yeah RIGHT!! ....hahahaha! I love this song................ Gotta wonder what the back story is though regarding it...lol. August Campbell wrote it and sang this with his band, Spur Of The Moment Band. Although about 10 others have claimed to have written it and sang it, including Jimmy Buffet...it was August who first did. M

I don't know how I forgot about that song. Its among the top of the list as one of my all time favorites. I just introduced it to my son who is a musician the other day.

That's pretty neat Moose, I wouldn't have ever found that. That's dated 2010 and not long ago on XM radio I think Cousin Brucie had her on and she didn't mention that. Good find and thanks.

I know I'm a little late with this but two songs I really like with back stories are "Fat Old Sun" & "Coming Back To Life". Both were written by David Gilmore and included on Pink Floyd albums back in the 1970's. Fat Old Sun is often described as a tribute to the English countyside and Coming Back To Life is a song Gilmour wrote for his wife that describes how he felt prior to first meeting her and also how he felt immediately after meeting her. Both have great lyrics and provoke thought every time you listen to them.

A little off thread. FYI Paul Revere (Di*k) from Nebraska of Paul Revere and the Raiders passed away today at age 76 of cancer at his home in Idaho. 1st hit was a cover of louie louie in 1963. Went on to many hits in the 60's and was still working just before going home.
