I saw an article about them a couple of years ago and thought it would make a good trip. Love the live birthing viewing area idea. Let me know if you make the trip.

I can't believe that I have not visited the ILLINOIS RAILWAY MUSEUM just north of here. www.irm.org/I have been to the train watching park in Rochelle. That is fun if you like to watch one of the busiest RR crossing in the country. www.rochellerailroadpark.org/

They have one of the Big Boys up there....pretty darn cool. I have driven past a little museum dedicated to trolleys or inter-urbans up near Aurora right on the Fox River. You know anything about that one Dave? Yup. It is called the Fox Trolly Museum. I have not been there. Sounds neat. www.foxtrolley.org/

They still are trying to figure out how to get from Alton to St. Louis FAST. Same congestion problems are trying to be worked out in Chi-Town. I rode the NE corridor several times and they get up to about 125 MPH. It is really not all that much viewing fun as the exterior view is pretty much a streak.

That's kind of the kicker CP. Our 'high speed' rail is not all that high at all, maybe 100 MPH, if that. I think we have been sold a bill of goods. Trains were doing nearly that back in the 30's on well maintained regular lines around here. I thought 'high speed' was going to mean 2-300 MPH like you said. This is NOT the French or Japanese 'Bullet trains'. lol that was what I was thinking too the Bullet train, most all high rails from other countries go around 300mph. Guess we need better technology lol

How are you going to have a high speed railway in Illinois when they got to stop at every little podunk town to pick up a few passengers. Why heck, the train can barely (if at all) make it up to speed before it needs to begin slowing down for the next stop.
Planners have not been realistic in their thinking about this.
Bullet trains are a cost effective way to move masses of people quickly. Such as in Japan or France or China or like a metro subway system in very large cities.
In Illinois, bullet trains are an efficient way to dump massive amounts of money down the drain to benefit very few people. Cost effective? Not!
And BTW, take that presidential library plan for Chicago and shove it. Let Hawaii or Kenya build/fund it. We sure don't need another money pit in Illinois.

Southern IL- the Shawnee National Forrest, especially the Makanda Area & the Makanda Inn. Giant City park, the lodge is much like the one at Starved Rock state park. In the park there's a zip line as well as other fun stuff to do. And don't miss "Fat-Mans-Squeexe". Mr R made it through while a student, and again about 15 years ago, but I don't think he'll be doing it again:-)
