Illinois Speed Limits Governor Pat Quinn has vetoed legislation aimed at increasing the speed limit from 65 to 70 miles per hour on interstate highways around Illinois. The legislation follows the passage of a 2013 law increasing the speed limit to 70 miles on interstates which the Quinn administration interpreted to only apply to rural areas. Quinn cited studies showing increased speeds lengthen stopping distance and produce more violent collisions. am1250wspl.com/pages/9033767.php

Lets just lower back to 55. (sarcasm). Earlier in the summer I traveled out west and 75 or 80 mph limits were common place. Didn't see a lot of accidents along the way. Granted, the roads out there were less densely traveled, but with the advent of so many safety features on these cars nowadays, traveling at a higher speed is much safer than it was years ago. I thought this was a cool video that shows the advancement of safety features over a 50 year period: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPF4fBGNK0U

The video sure surprised me Dog. I didn't expect those results. I always thought my old '53 Buick special would have held up pretty good.

The veto is for tollways only, most of which are in the Chicago area.

Cars might be safer but when you factor in the electronic gadgets motorists are using while driving it has become more hazardous on the roads. You cannot be concentrating on your driving and surroundings and carrying a conversation on a cell phone, or playing with a laptop, tablet, or GPS and that is the norm on our highways. The motorists are doing everything but driving, I drive over 150k miles a year and witness stupidity constantly. Trucks, cars, cops, civilians, young and old alike the distracted driving is entirely out of control, common sense disappeared years ago. Some sort of technology in cell phones, laptops, and tablets to disable them when in motion would be the best and most effective way to solve the problem, along with a law banning anything hanging on your windshield like CA has.

I don't understand the mentality of those that sit in the left lane, going the same speed as the driver in the right lane. They appear to think that they are the traffic regulators, and that they are going to adjust everyone's speed by refusing to pass and move back into the right lane. When in reality, they are causing road rage, and the likelihood that someone behind them is going to try to squeeze in to get around.
The drivers that are going faster will pass and be long gone leaving us to drive at our speed in the right lane. If you are alert, drive at a set speed, watch for traffic coming up behind you, and those in front of you, you should be able to pass those that are going slower than you, and move back, allowing anyone coming up behind you to do the same, without taking off the cruise, if not for those that refuse to pass when they move into the left lane. I think drivers exams should include interstate driving!!

We have had a left lane law in IL for 10 yrs., I wonder how many tickets have been issued for violators ? www.isp.state.il.us/media/pressdetails.cfm?ID=161I often wonder if the ones that never leave the left lane have never been trained in common courtesy and driving rules or if they are just being jerks.

I'm sure some fall under the category of not understanding how to drive in 2 lanes. that leaves the rest...jerks. and it seems the growing mentality. when women have taken being strong and empowered to the level of being proud to be a b!tch, and kids mouth off to their parents, growing numbers have no respect for authority figures because of a small percentage of bad seeds, when blacks think every incident is race related, when people sue for no reason, and win, etc etc, etc... then the jerk mentality is just going to keep being fed. sadly, I have to drive among them every week

While I agree w/most of what you said Waldo, not this, as the passengers should be allowed to use them. In fact, some of them will keep kids quiet & not distractive in the backseat. Partners could make phone calls, set GPSs etc....

My hubby thinks I am nutz, when I talk about this. One of my biggest pet peeves,is the left lane abuser.
