One thing that don't make sense to me. There has other businesses that has shut their doors for because not enough business or owners retired or what ever else. But I have never heard of a business that closed and turned around and ask for donations from the public. So why is this place?

Unfortunately, because it's the way things are done these days. Don't have the money? Go to gofundme and see if you can strike gold. It's up to those with the money to donate to differentiate between which cause is worthy and which isn't.
A private person looking for help to buy or renovate a theater with donations is not a worthy cause to me. It's still a privately owned business. It would be different if it was a community owned theater.
Buyer beware. Donor beware, too.
Time to let the lawyers sort it out.

Thank you for your post Anonymous. I still think it is scam for someone to put money in their own pockets. How many people that are hard up ask for money to pay their hospital bills, or a friend or family members funeral, while others are responsible enough to pay their own bills. Maybe I should go to gofundme for my own pleasure. How many people will donate?

I sure HOPE it is Mr. Burke(or his representatives) that end up with the projectors. That way his intents can be followed through on. It just makes me ill. Such a great act of generosity to our community and have it take such an unsavory turn. I hope it doesn't put such a bad taste in his mouth that he regrets trying to help out our community. No one likes stress and law suits. No one likes feeling deceived or ripped off. He certainly doesn't deserve having any of those feelings. Weren't you supporting Katie a while ago? Are you switching sides? She was part of the 2008 cajoling party trying to convince us to move across country and make a big investment of money and hard work into opening it. That was the first time that my family saw the palace that I would disappear to, almost semi-annually for a week to ten days at a time over the prior several years, but brought home no pay. I thought that I was being a loyal friend, helping him be successful in his venture over those years. In 2009 I found out that loyalty and friendship mean absolutely nothing to him. I left quietly giving Tim back the Majestic because I loved that place. I wanted to see what it could be with "big money people" running it. I always supported it being open, it is good for Streator. Don't you think that I have sacrificed to try to make Vermillion St. a better business environment for all of us, particularly at night? Of course when I found out that the "big money people from Pennsylvania" coming to take care of the problems with the building and make it a sustainable business was nothing but a huge lie to play on my love of the building and get me out so that he could do it with his partner Katie. I was very upset. Over the years of seeing Katie drive over here for just a few people, sometimes in bad weather, and after feeling very confident that she had to be taking real estate commissions to pay bills for her partnership with him, I started to have some respect for her. After her seeing how he did me, a friend of almost 30 years, who had put so much into trying to help him be successful here, and being a professional real estate person, when I found out that she did not have a lease to stand behind yet took responsibility for $130,000 of donations, I lost any respect for her that I even might even have thought about having. They are both at fault in my opinion. I love that theatre, but it is time to give it up. Say good-bye to it. RIP Majestic. That building has way to many problems that the big money people from Pennsylvania neglected to take care of. He is asking way, way too much for it even if the projectors were included. What if Katie were to get donations to offer something that he agreed upon or someone else came along to buy it, what about the problems with the building? Selling the building with problems at an inflated price is not going to do anything to help keep the theatre viable. That just means there is even a bigger payment that the theatre can not afford to pay. In my opinion, the best option for there being a chance for the Majestic being a sustainable business in Streator, is for there to be full disclosure of these problems and a reasonable asking price considering the work that needs to be done. However that will never happen because I really doubt that number would be enough to pay his mortgage off. He is under water in it, in my opinion. It is probably going to sit boarded up for years and continuing to decay, maybe he'll make some trips out here to do some projects but I think he will just hide for quite a while. After he kicked out, it was really funny the way that he would try to hide from me when he came to town. I know that when he's here, he sleeps in that projection room with the outside vent above it. When the booth equipment is shut off, you can hear what goes on out on the street pretty well. I saw an old friend of his that I know a little too, out there for a while trying to get into the door. He's a good guy, so I went to chat with him. He obviously didn't know what Tim had done to me. He said that he was supposed to meet Tim but was getting ready to leave, so I told him that I could help. I yelled, "Hey Mr. Big Money from Pennsylvania, Harry is here to see you." I chatted with Harry for just a minute and then saw Tim peak around the corner but not open the door. I started really chatting it up with Harry, we talked for several more minutes until he was ready to leave. All of the sudden Tim slung the door open with bed head and a nasty look on his face and then walked away. It's kind of funny because I always hold my head up high when I walk by there, proud of what I had done, some people feel the need to hide though. MM, just say good bye to the Majestic, I really doubt that it will ever be an open movie palace again, by Tim's design. I think that the corporation and it's officer should be held liable to make the donors whole. They should be required to either replace the entire $130,000 donated, returning amounts to the documented donors and the rest donated to various non-profits in Streator. Either that or they should provide digitally projected entertainment at the Majestic for at least the ten year expected life of the equipment as was expected by those who donated. Not doing that would make it fraud in my opinion. Tim is the one who should take the most responsibility for this since he is the one that shut the place down.

He's generally a late night person, so if you wanted to give him a message, early mornings would probably be good. Just yell in front of the marquee, he'll be able to hear you if he's in that booth, his favorite place in the theatre. I don't know though, now that digital equipment was in there, it could be tainted. He's probably got to be back to work on Tuesday though, so don't delay.

Mass hysteria & conspiracy theories abound over a theater closing. I don't know if I would call it mass hysteria, but having another boarded up movie theatre and a lack of entertainment in our community is not good for any of us here. Tim's corporation representing that donors will get value for giving up their money and then closing it up to take the money and run, is just wrong. I'll agree with conspiracy, but do you think that it is just a theory that his corporation solicited donations under the ruse of having an open theatre? It didn't work out bad for him the last time he did this type of thing, but the difference this time he is screwing the entire community, not just one family. If there are no consequences for his actions then I am confident that he will just go on to screw more people.

Partnerships are a tricky business. The days of doing business on a handshake doesn't fly in 2014. It would be wise that anyone going in on a business venture to get it all in writing. Otherwise we end up with a he said/she said situation like we have here.

Either way, the entire Streator community is the loser in HIS games. RIP Majestic

before I make any judgment I will wait till what the courts have to say in this mess. a partnership has three sides and the courts will decide what side holds the cards.

The civil matter between them is one mess that will play out for along time with it being a no win situation for the movie-goers. I am very confident that the Majestic will not reopen after this. Even if it does, it still seems to be a very doomed business venture, between the lack of attendance, high expenses, major problems with the building, and then add in the ill feelings and unprofessional image portrayed with the huge public battle and how could anyone ever expect to have a sustainable business there.
The movie-goers of Streator are the losers, no matter who wins Tim & Katie's court battle, with monies that could have been spent on "Saving the Majestic" being used to feed some lawyers instead.
There needs to be some other type of legal action against the officers of the for-profit corporation who solicited donations for a purpose and then deprived donors of the results to take the money and run, in my opinion.

Your son's business is pretty much boarded up here as well, is it not? I walk by there all the time, and many people have pulled up in front only to find the doors there locked up, and closed too as well. That being said is not good either for this community or the whole downtown area, and that is also a huge building....on the main drag too. It is although refreshing to come on here and find you NOT bashing the City, or the SPD...btw. I didn't come back on this board though to bash you or your son's business, which I have stated in previous threads that I felt you and your family were an asset to this town. I refuse to join the social media bashing band-wagon here too regarding Tim and the Majestic. I won't post here what ALL he told me either regarding why you no longer managed that theatre...but don't you think that perhaps him and Katie have some major issues here...more then likely along the same lines? It does sadden me to see the theatre all boarded up and the "for sale" sign on her...and I for one cannot for the life of me even envision Tim selling her either. That theatre has always been a labor of love to him, as it was also to my father back in the '60's....so hense the high price tag, eh? $$$$ I have yet to talk to either Tim or Katie regarding ALL the truths here, which I am remaiming optimistic until I hear both sides of. If there happens to result in lawsuits then let there be, hopefully the truth will prevail. Until then I form NO oppinion. Very sad for those all involved, and also for our whole community too of course as well .... M
