Here's a second grade problem taken directly from a new Common Core Houghton Mifflin textbook:
4. Brian has some boxes of paper clips. Some boxes hold 10 clips and some boxes hold 100. He has some paper clips left over. He has three more boxes with100 paper clips than he has boxes with 10 paper clips. He has two fewer paper clips left over than he has numbers of boxes with 100 paper clips. What number of paper clips could he have?
If American parents don't wake up and revolt soon...

Here's hoping that the teachers of our children decide to use common sense in attempting to meet the unusual demands of the Common Core's bizarre curriculum. Let's hope that they ensure that the students aren't short-changed too badly, while we wait for this latest educational nightmare to wreak its havoc and die.
Teachers who can are going to scramble as fast as they can for the exits in order to retire and to go into other professions.

“There is usually only a limited amount of damage that can be done by dull or stupid people. For creating a truly monumental disaster, you need people with high IQs.”
The above is a truly great quote.
The real problems in public school education began shortly after Sputnik when the "powers that be" decided to look to the universities to see "how to teach."

Actually, universities were "calling the shots" easily a hundred years before that.

How does this curriculum compare to others in the world? Would kids of the same age from other countries be able to answer these questions?

They would be able to I believe dog, most of the other countries anyway. Seems they may have a different teaching method than the Us? not sure as to why all the Foreign countries are smarter and more advanced. common core method I think, who knows without googling.

How does this curriculum compare to others in the world? Would kids of the same age from other countries be able to answer these questions? The short answer to this issssssss...you can find a study out there to support whatever claim you wish to make.
Howeverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...you can find examples online for yourself and judge the merits of these grade-level-specific expectations for our kids.
Some eggheads at the university level suggest that the standards are too easy. Look at the material I posted on this forum concerning Common Core and judge for yourself.
America has INTENTIONALLY dumbed our curriculum down for DECADES. The chickens have come home to roost.
For both their daily work and the Big CC Tests, when our American students are faced with trying to figure out what the questions are asking and then detail their thinking with words, pictures, and math calculations - they are going to say **** **, I'm not doing this $h*t.

What moronic think tank comes up with this kind of crap? Students should unite and revolt against this garbage.

I would agree with what you said about the dumbing down of the curriculum has been happening for some time and many kids these days would say f**k this s**t. I don't think the answer is sticking with current curriculums. I also think there is a place for a tougher curriculum though. I personally feel we are actually holding back much talent by making things so easy. Lets kick it up a few notches and let the bright kid s shine. I am a bit surprised that you want a teacher and a student to be satisfied with being able to teach and learn such a simple problem as the first one. I remember a conversation we had a while back about how Americans wouldnt revolt, because after all we ARE Americans. But yet you struggle with the idea that the children can't handle a curriculum as tough as common core.

The issue requires much more "backstory" than I'm able to supply here. It's easier, more efficient, and more economic to "kick it up a few notches" without instituting the wholesale change in instruction and testing that the CC scam entails. The education system is broken because our families are in disarray and society as a whole is broken. The problems in the schools reflect our society at large. You'd might be surprised at how many high school graduates, let alone 5th graders...wouldn't have clue as to the answer of 1/8+ 3/8, IMO.

ALL I can say is WTF! Maybe all you parents should be picketing the admin building with signs that read...TEACH our children MATH 1+1=2! GET RID OF COMMON CORE!

You would be surprised how smart normal kids are when parents read to them every night, talk to them instead of at them, and answer all their questions, even if it means looking it up with them. Most will exceed your expectations, when you set the bar high.
