I think the reason they are starting earlier this year is incase they end up having more snow days and kids would get out of school in may instead of middle of june. I remember when I went to school in the 80's ,school didn't start until sept 1st or after labor day.

when I was a kid in grade school it was usually after Labor Day as well. Last winter was crazy, wonder how it will be this year? What do you think about year round school schedules? My cousin's kids go one and works out pretty well for them. They have longer breaks during the school year

And, most of our mother's and grandmothers were stay at home moms who were there to watch us, if school was called off in the morning.

I don't agree with that. I think a lot of consideration is put into whether or not they call a snow day. I don't have any issues with that. It's the early dismissals every Wednesday, the half day once a month, and all of the teacher's institute days that I don't understand. Again, we look back to "when we were kids" and we didn't have those days off. I don't believe today's education or the way it's taught is BETTER than when we were kids either.

I agree, Anon. Times have changed, and I think they feel they can't just wait till morning to make a decision when they are calling for a big storm.

I have heard lots of parents complain about getting the call at 6 am that school is cancelled and then they have to find someone to stay home with their kids while they go to work. Also, there have been times where the weather got bad after school started and it's hard to send kids home after they get to school because parents are at work and have no one to pick them up or get them off the bus.

I may be exaggerating a bit there but as cold and snowy as it was last year and I'm out there in it daily-it still didn't compare to many of the winters I fought through growing up..

Knowing that those who compile yearly snow totals say last years was the second snowiest ever and one of the coldest ever, your thought is very delusional.

Are we the only country that does not have full time school??? I thought Summer vacation was a throw back to the times when most people were farming and needed the kids home to work the crops in the Summertime.
