Was the event you are researching associated with the PNA? I believe there are still activities conducted @ the PNA hall, & people there might be helpful with your search.

Can anyone tell about the old Polish picnics? Eva, they were held at Oakland park. There was polka music, the ding-a-ling sisters would perform in the afternoon, there were a handful of carnival rides, bingo, FOOD, and beer. Lots of beer. The park was always packed. As a child, it was the event we looked forward to every year. You met up with your friends, and spent the entire day there.

I grew up in a house across from Oakland Park and remember the P.P. very well, I remember as a kid laying in my bed in the early morning on set up day I would lay and watch till my parents woke up then bug the crap out of them to take me over there lol. Then as I got older I remember going with all my friends was always a great time. It ended before I became of age to partake in the alcohol but I do remember a lot of beer being sold and consumed. Also remember the music and all the people that would gather and partake in all that was offered. I believe at one time I heard they stopped it due to all the drunken brawling, of course that could have just been people talking b.s.

Ahhh...vikesfan, yes, there were. But, despite all of the drunken brawls, it went on for years. It was a tradition. everything was, as sniper likes, made from scratch. It was a ton of hard work by a lot of volunteers. I'm sure they got tired of the brawling every year, and eventually said, enough. But, like you said, was that just the rumor? Could've been like everything else, the group that chaired it no longer wanted the commitment, and no younger people stepped up to take over. That happens with a lot of those big functions.
