I remember when they came. Never went to the game but I was filling my car up at Hi-Lo BS'ing with Roy Blumenshine that night. A car pulled in and the guy asked for directions for the school. It was Bill "Mad Dog" Madlock. Good hitter that got traded to San Fran.

I remember the Old Timers Banquets at the PNA Hall. Some of the players would roll into town and hang out for the evening. They would play highlights. The Cubs were bad back then, too, so the highlights for an entire season lasted about 10 minutes. I got to meet Billy Williams and one of my all time favorite Cubs.... Jose Cardenal.
Today the players will make the rounds for similar events to the Old Timers Banquets, but there is no way in hell that they will play a charity softball, basketball, etc. game. Most of those guys are each making more than our entire city budget!

My son in laws niece, and 3 friends were hit by a dd when they were in high school. The survivors were lifeflighted to Stl, and a number of Cardinals players visited Jess and Lara numerous times during their long hospital stay. The girls were avid ball players, and fans. So, some still give back.
