Any one read the article about the Eagle? Should this person get in trouble for trying to save eagles? I don't think he should. He was trying to help not harm these birds. What is your thought?

Before he was arrested by Illinois Conservation police last year for taking to safety two eaglets who had fallen with their nest near Oglesby, nature photographer Steve Patterson captured this image of one of the baby birds with one of its parents.

An online petition site has gathered more than 42,000 supporters from across the state and the nation who want wildlife protection charges against Steve E. Patterson, of Oglesby, dropped.
Illinois Conservation Police allege Patterson, 63, illegally took two baby eagles in spring 2013 from an area west of Oglesby and turned them over to the care of a wild animal rehabilitation facility in the Chicago area.
The eagles' nest had been blown to the ground from its perch and Patterson picked up the eaglets even though conservation authorities specifically told him not to help them.
Patterson, a wildlife photographer, admits he broke the letter of the law, but has claimed he had no real choice except to rescue the baby birds.
Earlier his month, Associate Judge Dan Bute declared a mistrial in the case after a jury of five men and seven women deliberated on the evidence and testimony for hours without reaching a verdict.
The Class A misdemeanor charges against Patterson remain pending, with a status hearing set for Wednesday, Oct. 29.
Patterson told The Times Tuesday he did not know if the tremendous online support would make a difference in his prosecution or not.
To date, he claims to have spent $14,000 in defending himself against the charges.
"It is nice to get such positive support," he said. "But we'll just have to wait to see what happens. Two eagles are alive (today) that probably would have been dead."
Patterson said he continues to keep track of the eagles recovery at the Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Chicago. He added it is his understanding one of the young birds may be released back into the wild in the next few months.
The Internet petition, originated by Yorkville resident Andie Groff, is directed toward La Salle County State's Attorney Brian Towne and Illinois Department of Natural Resources Director Marc Miller.
Included among the many thousands of comments from the petition site, change.org, are these posts:

from the report from the DOC this man has been involved in baiting of wildlife twice before and he plead guilty to the same thing in Wisconsin for doing the same thing up there. I don't see any harm in what he did but he failed to obey a conservation officers direct orders. letting him go would be like slapping the officer in the face. make him pay a fee and move on.

My family and I have been at Wild Life Prairie park, and have done some education on some birds. Enjoyed it. But that has been a while ago, though. I've been at Starve Rock where there was a group from near Mendota, I think, that does rehab. on injured birds and also does some education to the public on birds. Very interesting.

Now, in the winter, when you put bird feed in the feeders, how many squirrels get into the feeders?
