Sen. Introduces Bill To Test Out Taxing Motorists For Every Mile They Drive BUENA PARK (CBSLA.com) — The California Legislature is looking at a voluntary program that would tax motorists for every mile they drive. KCAL9’s Bobby Kaple reports that Sen. Mark DeSaulnier, D-Concord, introduced a bill to test out the vehicle miles traveled (VMT) tax because the state’s gas tax was no longer bringing in the revenue it used to due to people driving more fuel efficient vehicles. The program is modeled after ones in Oregon and Washington. “We want to do as Washington and Oregon have done in a much bigger state with much longer commutes…to make sure that we find out whether it would work, whether the public would like it or not,” DeSaulnier said. It’s unknown how much the tax would be, but Oregon currently charges its volunteers 1.5 cents per mile. “All of those things would be determined. We would let the agency determine that because this would be a voluntary program,” DeSaulnier said. Southland commuters were not thrilled about the idea of a VMT tax. “I bought a hybrid…one, because of my drive. I’m very opposed. I drive to Brentwood every day from Burbank, and I am already paying more than I should be,” Carmen Smith said. “So if we go on vacation and I drive up to Mammoth, that’s 600 miles. I thought this is why there is a federal gasoline tax on every gallon we purchase now? it seems to me we are taxed for everything we do or buy now.

But as we drive more efficiet vehicles we need less gas.The problem is government can never do with less-it always needs more and we need to change that,but we only get to do that at the voting booth(and I'm beginning to think all politicians lie)So when it gets unbearable to all revolt is the next option.. |

The gov't itself lives on welfare.
All they do is tax,tax,tax While holding a gun to your head forcing you to give up your earned money you worked hard for and give it to them.

Motor fuel tax can only be used for roadway construction, repair and maintence. As vehicles become more fuel efficient and people drive less, less money is collected for these purposes. For those who feel the government should simply make due with less, how would you propose paying for roadway repair and maintence. The government agencies already hold off as long as possible and a trip north of town on Rt. 23 will show you the results.
Would privatizing all roadways to get them out of government hands be a more palatable solution for everyone complaining about the taxes? If so, what would your thoughts be on the toll gate installed at the end of your driveway?

Golly, how about we quit letting bids to the Gvts. buddies?
I do believe we could cut 40 to 50 percent of the costs if they were bid without kickbacks.

We have always had the best and brightest in the world so why do roads start falling apart right after we're done repaving a section of them.It can't be money is not the autobahn designed to last 20 years or more. It just seems spending more money at one time is better than spending a little all the time.. And rather than throw another tax at me just increase the ones already in place..Will we see fewer big pickups and suvs on road then-probably.... |

No rocket the Problem is HOW the Funding gets SPENT due to how the Highway bill was Written when ENACTED. See the Federal Government is Required by LAW to take the Cheapest BID so even if the Contractor is only using 5000 PSI concrete when 20000 PSI Concrete is 10% more in cost and lasts 20 Years LONGER before needing any repairs guess which one the Government has to USE BY LAW. Also in Europe the Contractor is REQUIRED to Warranty their WORK for at least 30 Years. Here it ends the Second that the Construction is OVER.

I've designed, bid out, inspected, and construction managed many roadway projects at the local, county, state, and federal level. I've been in a position to accept or reject bids and have never been offered or accepted any type of kickbacks nor have I been directed to accept or reject any bid by any politician.
Oh wait, I did accept a thanksgiving turkey once that a contractor was delivering to their clients and vendors. The turkey was good but I doubt it cost 40 to 50 percent of any project they bid on.
What is your roadway construction experience that brought you to that 40 to 50 percent kickback number?

I never said 40 to 50 percent kickback, I said it was possible to remove 40 to 50 percent of the cost. HUGE difference between the two. If that really is your work experience though, I can see why you don't believe me. It took years of losing help and doing with less for me to believe what we could do if wee had to to survive, and yea, I wasn't happy about it either. but we are still here. Perhaps they need to remove a few of you and replace them with a few of us to start the ball rolling. |

There certainly should be some sort of accountability. A few years ago, they had to replace the entire bridge deck on the Abraham Lincoln Bridge over the Illinois on I-39 by LaSalle. That piece of road is only about 30 years old. It would have been at enormous expense. Shouldn't the bridgework last longer than that? You have to hold companies to account for their work. Governments have no incentive to do so, if they did, there would be no reason for taxes to rise. Politicians have but one job, and that is to get re-elected. |
