I know that I'm ready to start on my gardening. Ready for those tomatoes and green beans. And ready to eat some fresh garden vegetables out of my own garden. How many can or freeze the garden vegetables? We are planning on this year freezing and canning. I would like to attempt to make ketchup this year. My mother did that when I was young and now I would like to attempt it myself.

it takes a lot of tomatoes to make ketchup since you have to cook them down to a sauce. I have made salsa and tomato juice plenty of times. I think canning is a lost art in these times.

I'm ready for gardening, and so is St. Michael's and Northlawn since we gave them some seedlings to start. This will be the best gardening year ever! The food arts are NOT lost and we are passing them down!

Yeah, you are right about the canning. It is a lost art any more. But I think it should come back due to we all need to watch our pennies and canning is a good survival sense. And yes it does take a lot of tomatoes for ketchup. But I would like my children to try what I had when I was young at least one time. Whether I actually do is a different story though. At least the thought is there. My wife grew up on a farm. Her mother used to freeze green beans and sweet corn. One year, my youngest planted a flower and bought it home for mothers day. I planted it in the garden and she got the biggest bang out of it. One year with my oldest she wanted sunflowers in the garden, so we started a couple of solo cups and let the plant start in the house and transferred them in the garden and they turned out very well. We had a elderly polish couple that lived next to us when we first moved into our house. They used to plant a lot of cabbage and the lady made home made sauerkraut. She gave us some to try. Oh My God that was awesome. Now I'm searching on how to make that and hopefully I will have the ump and attempt that also this summer.

I don't have much room for a garden myself. I usually grow a few tomato plants and some cucumbers. last year I really had a lot of tomatoes so I made some salsa.

With food prices skyrocketing ,don't be surprised to see food from your garden stolen. Only way I will have a garden if I had a greenhouse that is indoors so people cannot get to them to steal them. Look what happened when gas prices spiked, people just went out and stolen gas from other peoples cars.

Yes, Rocket, food prices are increasing. But that should be more of a reason people should have a garden. That way you don't have to buy as much in the store. And if possible, can or freeze the product. And on top of that, Rocket, Don't you think that people steal food from the grocery store? My wife and I are happy to offer people some of our garden product with people if we are able to and we have shared our garden products.

I am diffently ready for gardening. I'm having spring fever and am itching to get outside. I've been looking on line on ideas on gardening tips. I'm ready for my tomatoes, potatoes, jalipenos, green peppers, radishes. The only things that seem like they want to steal are the birds and rabbits.

Look what happened when gas prices spiked, people just went out and stolen gas from other peoples cars. Funny, someone at the hospital expressed that same concern last year. Wanted to put up big fences and signs! I figure if somebody is desperate enough to steal veggies then they are welcome to them, we are donating them to local food pantries and charities anyway. And nobody is going to make much money selling veggies, just ask the folks at the farmer's market! Last year we raised about 800lbs of veggies in a 20'x70' garden. This year I think I'll put veggies in the front yard and invite people to share them. Check out this link: www.ted.com/talks/ron_finley_a_guerilla_gardener_in_south_central_la

Some communities have community gardens where you can get a plot to use either for free or small seasonal fee. Would be good for those without yard space
