I don't think changing L. Lic's to an "A" (They're NOT making more, just changing the classification of 3) will make it more customers, they'll just go to a diff. est. We'll see what the new "upscale business" It may very well hire more peeps!
BTW. mm, Blueberry sounds yummy! ;P

Sitting in the States Attorneys office right now I asked a couple of area police officers if they have the same trouble as we do with bars. They replied yes. I asked if there was a fight in progress when they show up, what can they do? They answered that if neither party wanted to press charges, at most they might be able to charge them with a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge. They said it doesn't deter fights from occurring since it is such a light charge.

Legal or not. Every town I have lived in has had booze and gambling. (Also drugs) They also have had schools, churches and parks.

Kyle said "I never been in favor of letting people do what ever they want."
I'm glad now that you didn't run for office. Jeeze. So much for free enterprise. You, on the other hand, my friend, don't want anyone telling you what business you can run and where you can run it. If it were a requirement that followed our laws that kept the business from being here, I wouldn't have a problem with. I asked for a justification for it, they wouldn't provide one. I am confident that it does not follow our laws. Made up requirements to keep businesses out isn't helping our town grow at all.

Are you really trying to convince me and the people of Streator that violence is acceptable and I should stop talking about ways to reduce it because there is just no way to deter it. I will not accept that it is legal here because there is no way to deter it. It is just not right. People feeling that it is all right to start throwing punches because no one is able to do anything about it is not good for our community. What if in a few years, when they are old enough to enjoy a drink, it is one of your kids that someone decides to punch and the fall takes their life? I really hope that it doesn't happen to anyone, but think about it. How would you feel then?

I really hope that it doesn't happen to anyone, but think about it. How would you feel then? I don't think anyone is trying to convince you that violence is acceptable. I think people are trying to show you the reasons that allow it to happen. Like it or not, it isn't cost effective to prosecute a disorderly conduct charge. How much do you really think the overall cost is to arrest, charge, and prosecute a case is? Probably a lot more than the fine brings in. Not saying that makes it right, but many of these petty charges aren't dealt with anymore. Vandalism and minor property damage are left to the insurance to deal with. Is it reasonable for the police to come out to collect fingerprints and collect evidence on a broken window? It isn't cost effective. Once again, it isn't right but it is the way society is going, and most people are indifferent to the little things or things that don't affect them directly. If you want to keep talking about it, go ahead, but you need to focus on the whole issue, not just part of it. Let's see some editorials on the States Attorney lack of prosecuting the little things, the lack of the state to increase the penalties for petty offenses. You need to start realizing that these problems are everywhere. Look at the flash mobs on Michigan Ave. Plenty of business, plenty of foot traffic and yet INNOCENT people are getting attacked. These aren't drunks who are beating on each other, these are innocent people. I said I probably wouldn't go uptown Streator after dark, but I think I would probably rather go into Carbo's after dark, than to go on Michigan Ave after dark. It makes national news and people still aren't staying away from there. It's comments from people like you Kyle that make people afraid of Streator. When they read your stuff, it makes it sound like the south side of Chicago.

"The city's decision to redistribute liquor licenses has nothing to do with the state allowing video gaming in taverns, Lansford said. "It has more to do with the demand," the mayor said. "Individuals can now open a business with these available." Iverson Bedei said she prefers liquor licenses being available to restaurants or prospective restaurants, rather than taverns."
You will never convince me that the sudden "demand" for licenses isn't related to legal gambling...No one was chomping at the bit to obtain them before, or there would be new "businesses" already...
"Additionally, the city council approved the sale of property at 315 S. Park St. and the demolition of the former BK Auto Sales at 215 W. Main St."
Wonder how much longer it will be before they approve the demolition of the burned out house on Cotton Street...You know the one, it burned shortly after the one on Cotton & Illinois...The owner of that property took care of business, while the other house sits dilapidated to blight the neighborhood and decrease property values for those who live nearby...Not to mention it's a complete safety hazard...

While it may be a mere misdemeanor charge, if they get enough of them - costing them $$$ - they may be inclined to alter their behavior...Hit 'em hard in the pocketbook and they won't be able to afford to get drunk and rowdy...Many a behavior has been changed when consequences actually are suffered, but NOTHING will change if folks can simply get by with it...

If the law is never going to be enforced for any reason, but as you say because the charge is so small that it is not used because they don't feel that it will deter crime, then isn't it basically legal? If our society allows it continue then it is accepted. Maybe you should change your username. I probably wouldn't even know that you had any if your name wasn't fatheroftwo. Oop's, did I mention them by saying your name? Are you going to be like Familyman now and tell me not to even mention your name? I take it that you didn't like the thought that I planted in your head? Those kind of thoughts enter my mind every time that I see someone stagger out onto the street and get in a car.

Ahh, the crime is acceptable here because it is too expensive to enforce our laws. We'll have a nice fountain, but if our kids fall wrong when being punched, we'll just live without them? So when someone breaks a window in front of SPD, they are allowed to just walk away too? Let's see some editorials on the States Attorney lack of prosecuting the little things, the lack of the state to increase the penalties for petty offenses. I've known the State's Attorneys office to read SO before. Is the problem at the State's Attorney's office? They can't prosecute a case without it being presented to them, can they? I sent a letter to them about a tourist being severely beaten on Main Street and hospitalized for head trauma. It was almost a week after the incident, when they were calling me to find out who the victim was, because SPD couldn't even provide them with a report. It doesn't seem to me that the problem is the State's Attorney's office. If the problem is the State's Attorneys office, wouldn't our Mayor or some City leader let us know so that we could ask Mr. Towne for change, instead of just allowing crime to be legal and accepted here?

FYI my son years ago was transported to Peoria with a skull fracture that was life threatening. I'm a little sensitive to it. You could have just asked how I would feel if anyone lost their life. I would feel bad for anyone who loses a life senselessly.
When I ran for mayor I said that the council and police dept needed to be held accountable and we needed more law enforcement. You were at the forum. Have you forgotten that? I said we needed a new police chief. I'm not happy with a lot of things that go in this town. But complaining about it doesn't change anything. I've ran for council twice. I've campaigned that we need to get tougher on drugs. We need more enforcement. We need to be proactive. The licquor commission needs to get tougher. Join with me and others and run for council to make that change happen. Actions speak louder than words.
And no, fighting is not acceptable and legal. My comments didn't say that. You took it that way. The officers I talked to said it is a tough thing to get a disorderly conduct charge to stick. It's not as easy to make the arrest as you would like to think it is.

You really don't have a good handle on the law, yet you come on this website and act like you do. If someone would break a window at the police department that would be criminal damage to state supported land which is a no no.
