Jude, sorry, for their first car, yes it should be reliable, but don't go overboard, most kids wreck their first one...... It is simply a cost of learning. Some won't be too bad and they can be fixed cheap enough, but the chances of a 4-5K car being fixed unless they do it themselves is remote.
I would look for a 900-1500 dollar granny car, say a mid to late 90's Buick Century, Olds cutlass Ciera, Buick Lesabre, Olds 88, Pontiac Bonneville...... You should be able to find one with around 100K miles and in good shape for that number.

Ever since the cash for clunkers began, and a scam at that, the prices really went through the roof on older cars....... they now consider 100.000 miles low on older cars.........SCAM

My car would make a good work car or starter for around here Jude. I may put it on a 100 square board for $5 a square.

Cash for clunkers, was just a temporary fix for a failed economy and government that has no business sense. They borrowed money that the country did not have, and then removed an era of usable vehicles for transportation and parts. Temporary fixes, are the only way, the the misleaders can say they have a grasp on the economy. Hussein obama has been part of the problem for almost six years. Record debt, record length of unemployment and more deadbeats on welfare, what a great misleader, someone elected.
