Before I get started ,yes I did say in past that Christmas is the celebration of Christ and doesn't mean people going out and buying gifts for people. The retailers changed what the true meaning of Christmas is about. Now with that said ,even those in the past I tell everyone not to get us anything ,but they do anyway, this year I been informed by the family and other relatives ,that due to the economy and money situation, there will be no presents this year, just a small dinner. That sucks for my spouse, cause she loves Christmas and gifts and gets so excited when she opens gifts. The happiness it brings to her are precious. And we do disagree on this subject all the time ,but I let her have her fun at Christmas time doing what she likes to do. I do put up decorations but don't believe in people receiving gifts since it is suppose to be about the celebration of Jesus Christ birth.

Small inexpensive gifts are good too. I know that there are some good deals to be found downtown tonight. Flowers Plus has always had everything 1/2 price at midnight madness. A candle or flowers perhaps? Christmas can be a sad time for many who have no family or have lost loved ones. Your small dinner will be a blessing just to be together. Hope your Christmas is a merry one. I am glad you remember the real reason for the season. God's gift to us is the best gift of all.

Didn't get to the parade, decided to watch my home cause there was a home broken into over by me lastnight as everyone was downtown at the park. A perfect opportunity for thugs to rob peoples homes and garages.
Very Very Very low I say to do this to people when they are trying to enjoy the holidays, then to come home to find their possessions stolen.
And 99% of these crimes are for drug purchases. Selling peoples stolen stuff to get money to buy drugs with.
And again, police are not hitting hard to get the drugs off our streets.
Drugs should be like fireworks. Illegal in Illinois and anyone coming back into Illinois with Illinois plates are subject to a stop and search . Push the drugs out of Illinois and keep them out.
We need to clean up our city our county and our state to make it a better place to want to live.

Rocket, maybe one of those overpaid and underworked city employees could sponsor a large meal and a cruise for you and a friend. One employee makes over a $100,000 a year and benefits. He surely has some spare gratitude for the less fortunate After all, he was without a job, for a while , and re- hired. I thought the dumacrata in office implied , the economy, healthcare and jobs were on the mend. Good luck to you and yours, and keep your hand out for that something for nothing!

Christmas is what you make it. It is not about presents and such. It is about family and friends, and for some about the birth of Jesus. I celebrate the season and make the best of it. Who got robbed?

Great post. I too believe as many here that Christmas has been hijacked by the retailers. And what is even more sad is that they've now Pi$$ed all over Thanksgiving, too.
They've got the majority of the public indoctrinated to this black Friday nonsense and Thanksgiving has now become a retail version of a full court press. I always thought that the public was smart enough as a whole that they would reject and not participate in this BS based on principal. How wrong and naive was I?! I firmly believe in Capitalism but it surely has gone terribly wrong in regards to Christmas and Thanksgiving.

I can remmeber when I was little. Mom had a ful time job assistant in the credit union everyday driving from Ancona to Streator to work to support of 3 snot nose kids. Than at Christmas she worked at Pennys on the weekend to buy us Christmas Presents. Not a lot maybe 3 or 4 small things. but we were happy

I've heard of Sad Sacks before, rocket...c'mon buddy...cowboy the **** up and enjoy the season! Remember, even a Dollar Store item given with love can be done in remembrance and honor of the Nativity...when our Greatest Gift was born.

Three states in the East have outlawed some retailers from being open on Thanksgiving. I look for this trend to grow from state to state and justifiably so. What difference does it make if the sales everyone is crapping all over themselves to take advantage of are on Thanksgiving or on December 1st or whenever.
