You got it FOT. Dave Winfield was drafted by two pro basketball teams, NFL and and Sand Diego. He went from college right into the pros and never played a game in the minors. One great athlete and human being.

Wow. He was something else. I didn't get to see him play much. But I just read this. "In 2004, ESPN named him the third-best all-around athlete of all time in any sport."

My Gosh! My Gosh! I got an M-80 and blew several letters off his mail box one time. Job probably sends flowers to his grave everyday. But I cheated & looked it up. What a surprise and a great question!

I'm hoping you got the right answer Dave, but I kind of doubt it because this guy was loved by all of us. I'm thinking you might be guessing Ben Westlake, but that would be wrong, but very close. This guy was one terrific athlete. The fellow that holds the record is Reino Nori. He played football, basketball (with Ben Westlake), baseball, track and his freshman year he managed to wrestle. Played for the Bears and was drafted by Detroit Tigers but didn't go play or tryout. He would come into our practices before we got going and stand in the corner, both feet together where the lines meet, and put up the old two-hand kiss shot. He could really shoot and was a real bulldog. One of the nicest guys I've ever met but nobody fooled around with him. I went to his funeral up in DeKalb and sat with his old teammates and listened to their stories.

Reino Nori was an icon here with the Bulldog Football team. I had no idea he was such a great athlete when he was in college. Willy, was he a coach of yours in any sport? The leader of my prank was my BF at the time & one of his football players. Great GUY!!

Reino was head football, head wrestling and assistant baseball, so yes he was my baseball coach. He was loyal to his players and friends. When I was teaching I had a contract with the school. In October or so I got my draft notice so I appealed to the SS system for a deferment just for that school year. I was denied and the school was in a pinch. I called Reino, who at the time was working for the State Superintendent of Schools, Ray Page, who was also a great coach in our state. Reno said he didn't know if there was anything he could do but he'd try. One week later my deferment was given to me. When the school year was over I was drafted into the Army in July of '67. I kept in touch with all my coaches and wives over the past 50+ years and only have one wife still alive, and we keep in touch by phone and Facebook. Her name is Imo Barnewolt and used to teach at SHS. Long winded answer for a short question. lol But I really cared for my coaches, if it weren't for them taking such a great interest in me, I'd have quit high school. Without them I wouldn't have played two sports in college. I met Jack Stephens when I was freshman and he was a good friend till the day he died.

Willy said "One of the nicest guys I've ever met but nobody fooled around with him." You got that right. He scared me. But due to a total lack of athletic ability, I didn't go out for sports. I did work 2 jobs while at SHS.

I'm a firm believer that the more you lose, the closer you are to winning. Yogi ? Casey ? Clint Hurdle ?
