According to a sign donated by the Mother’s Study Club in 2001, Marilla Park was established in 1919 as a gift from the Plumb Family. The park is named after the wife of the city’s founder, Col. Ralph Plumb. Legend has it that the area was perhaps a winter campground for Chief Shabbona and the Pottawatomi Indians during the late 1700s to the mid 1800s. mywebtimes.com/ask_us/ask_main.php?id=232Why would the State close this park? The City of Streator owns the park, I believe this site has historical value. The city wanted to close Spring Lake and citizens took over to make this a nice park. Marilla Park could be kept open with a gravel road from the other entrance. Streator closed it's swimming pool. Let's do something positive for the city besides close what our ancestors did.

I really think we need this Park to stay open.

I LOVE marilla park. It's one of the few parks that I don't mind taking my daughter too. I would hate to see them close it done, I would rather see them fix it up for the families of streator! I don't care if we have to get a group to volunteer down there I would do it 5 months pregnant or not. I think it would be so awesome to fix it up, and get some new play equipment down there for the kids. Plus what's even better about this park is it's big to do all sorts of sports, and there is fishing right there a walk away. If they close this park I would see it as a HUGE loss to streator. That has always been one of my favorite places to go with my family or just to relax.

They need to reopen the east entrance off Otter Creek rd. and put in playground equipment, shelters, bathrooms etc... so they wont get flooded during torrential rains and leave the lower 1/2 for sporting events and outdoor concerts! It's wishful thinking but it sounds good.

Where does it say the state wants to close the park??? This was in the first paragraph of the Times article - "If the bridge entering Marilla Park in Streator is not repaired and the east side of the park is not reopened, [glow=red,2,300]the state will close the park.[/glow] " That statement doesn't mean they "Want" to close it, it may mean they will "Have" to, for safety reasons. Since the bridge collapsed in Minn., most states have done inspections and realize a LOT of bridges are in disarray & now, at a time when everyone has no money, it's just ... bad.

Agreed Blue star. I don't think anyone wants to close it. It is based on if it is safely accessed. Hopefully, funding is available to keep it open. I hope so too, many people can't afford to do much else, we need the parks.

Looks like a mis-statement from the Times then.. The state is not going to close the park but the bridge.. city opens up the east drive and the park remains open..the state doesnt care if the park is open or not, what they care about is the sdafety of the bridge If they close the bridge and dont open the east drive I wonder how TD will get to his house?

Is TD's house the only one up there? I thought there were a few homes up there? I used to frequent the area as my grandparents home was just up from the park entrance and its been years since Ive gone back up towards the homes, so there may be only the 1 house and I just remember incorrectly.

300,000 to pave the old entrance....Seems a little steep to me.... I agree the old gravel road would be fine.....
